Lil Nas X has released "World's Greatest," his first new song of the year. The track follows his 2025 EP Days Before Dreamboy and marks his latest step back into music after his 2025 arrest and hospitalization in Los Angeles, which followed an incident in which he allegedly charged at police officers.
The singer announced the song yesterday on Instagram, quoting his mother in the caption. "'Walk by faith, not by sight' was my mom's favorite phrase to say," he wrote. "As I move through life it resonates with me more & more."
Phillip Youmans directed the six-minute video for "World's Greatest," shooting it in Lil Nas X's hometown of Atlanta. It opens in a dance studio, where the "Old Town Road" singer rehearses stage choreography. His dance trainer confronts him directly: "You keep doing the same thing. You know what the problem is; you're just not fixing it."
From there, the video intercuts present-day footage with dramatized scenes from the rapper's childhood. It ends with a dedication to his late mother, Tamikia Hill — a resonance made explicit by the Instagram caption announcing the release.
The song arrives against the backdrop of a criminal case that has shadowed the past year of Lil Nas X's career. He faced three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one felony count of resisting an executive officer, carrying a potential five-year prison sentence. He pled not guilty to all counts.
In April, a judge ruled to dismiss the felony battery charges if the singer agreed to a mandated two-year treatment program. The judge cited Lil Nas X's diagnosis of bipolar disorder as a factor in offering the dismissal.
Before his arrest, Lil Nas X had released a run of one-off singles, including "Light Again!," co-produced by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. His first and, so far, only studio album, Montero, came out in 2021.
With "World's Greatest" — a song whose title, video and dedication all point toward recovery and self-reckoning — Lil Nas X signals whether the promised return to music will fully take shape.
