Lucy Hale will lead Roku's upcoming limited series "Scarlett Holmes," set to debut in 2027, the streamer announced.
What is the series about?
"Scarlett Holmes" reimagines Arthur Conan Doyle's detective universe as a romantic comedy. Hale plays Scarlett Holmes, billed as a "modern descendant of Sherlock Holmes" who inherits her family's "legendary powers of observation." Rather than tracking criminals, Scarlett applies those deductive gifts to "mysteries of love, dating and relationships," with help from her sidekick Jane Watson. The pair help clients work through "mixed signals, secret crushes, romantic dilemmas and everything in between."
Who joins her?
The logline introduces a complication for Scarlett: she falls for Ollie Moriarity, a podcast producer who is "secretly planning an exposé on her methods." Each episode's storyline draws inspiration from "a beloved romantic comedy," according to the longline.
What does Hale say about the role?
Hale, who played Aria on the 2010s hit "Pretty Little Liars," called the project a personal fit. "I am a true diehard fan of romantic comedies, and 'Scarlett Holmes' has that special something that made me fall in love with the genre in the first place," she said. "And I love that it brings mystery into the rom-com world in a way that feels really fresh and fun. It's charming, sexy, funny and has a lot of heart. Scarlett is smart, curious, a little complicated and like so many of us, looking for love. I feel completely thrilled to step into her shoes."
Who else is behind the camera?
Production details, per the announcement:
- Producer: Jaggi Entertainment, which also handles international sales
- Executive producers: Sophie Tilson and Steve Jaggi for Jaggi Entertainment; Lucy Hale
- Writers: Paris Herbert-Taylor and Katie Wilbert
- Roku oversight: Morgan Pichinson and Sabrina Lyall
How does this fit Hale's recent work?
The role continues Hale's run in the romance and mystery genres. She has appeared in "F, Marry, Kill," "Which Brings Me to You," "Puppy Love," "The Hating Game" and "Ragdoll." The combination of romantic-comedy lead and procedural-style case-of-the-week format positions the eight-episode series — though Roku has not confirmed a run length — as a hybrid aimed at the audience that lifted "Pretty Little Liars" and Netflix's "Emily in Paris."
Why does the Holmes adaptation keep multiplying?
The series enters a crowded field of Sherlock Holmes adjacent projects, most notably the BBC's long-running "Sherlock," CBS's "Elementary" and the Guy Ritchie film franchise. "Scarlett Holmes" distinguishes itself by relocating the deductive inheritance from Baker Street to a dating-app era and by foregrounding female perspective, both rare for the canon.
With production now announced and a 2027 window set, the next visible milestone will be casting for Jane Watson and Ollie Moriarity, the two roles whose chemistry with Hale will determine whether the mystery-of-the-heart premise sustains an episodic run.
