Malmö Opera will live stream its production of "The Shining" on September 27 at 10 a.m. EDT.
The opera, by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel. It premiered at Malmö Opera on August 22 and runs through October 7. The staging is a co-production with the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.
Patrik Ringborg conducts the Malmö Opera Orchestra and Chorus. The cast is led by Peter Kajlinger as Jack Torrance, Cornelia Beskow as Wendy Torrance and Luthando Qave as Dick Hallorann.
Keith Warner directs the production. Ashley Martin-Davis designed the sets, Nicky Shaw the costumes and masks, Robbie Butler the lighting and Mandy Demetriou the choreography.
Moravec addressed the work's unusual position in the repertoire in an email to OperaWire. "The Shining has become that rare thing: a contemporary opera with commercial appeal," he said.
The September 27 stream gives international audiences a chance to see the production before its Malmö run closes on October 7 — and a gauge of whether a King adaptation can hold that commercial appeal on screen as well as on stage.
