Italian soprano Maria Teresa Leva will make her debut at Lucerne's KKL on Oct. 31, stepping in at the last minute for Ekaterina Bakanova in the Verdi Requiem. The KKL (Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern, the city's main concert hall) announced the cast change, confirming that Leva covers both performances, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Who is stepping onto the Lucerne stage?

Leva arrives with a substantial European résumé. She has sung at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Festival Verdi, the Semperoper Dresden, the Arena di Verona and the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, among other houses.

That list spans Italy's major theatres and several of Europe's larger international companies, which matters for a debut of this kind. A Verdi Requiem (Verdi's 1874 sacred work for four soloists, chorus and orchestra) puts the soprano under sustained pressure in the culminating movements, and the soprano line carries much of the score's most exposed writing.

What does the lineup look like now?

Leva joins a soloist quartet completed by:

  • Ulrike Malotta, mezzo-soprano
  • Riccardo Della Sciucca, tenor
  • Marian Pop, bass

Manfred Obrecht conducts the Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana and the Coro dell'Opera di Parma, the company said.

What does this change for ticket holders?

In practical terms, little: the performances go ahead as scheduled, with the same conductor, orchestra and chorus, and three of the four announced soloists unchanged. What changes is the soprano chair, and with it the interpretive balance at the top of the ensemble.

Last-minute substitutions are routine at this level of the profession, but a house debut under replacement conditions is a different kind of test. Leva will be singing her first notes at the KKL in front of an audience that came expecting Bakanova, with no run-up beyond her own preparation. The company's announcement frames it simply as a debut; the circumstances make it a more visible one.

For Lucerne audiences, the Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 performances now double as a first look at a soprano whose career has been built largely across Italian and German houses. If the Requiem's demands suit her, the appearance could mark the start of a relationship with one of Europe's most prominent concert venues.
