Paramount+ has greenlit “Mushroom Murders,” a six-episode limited series starring Melanie Lynskey as Erin Patterson, with Daina Reid set to direct every episode.

The announcement says the series will cover the 97 days between the meal and Patterson’s arrest. The premise is the case of the Australian woman whom Paramount+ says was convicted on multiple counts of murder and attempted murder after allegedly preparing food for guests containing toxic death cap mushrooms.

The wording matters. The announcement uses “allegedly” for the preparation of the food, and it provides no release date, filming schedule, episode runtimes or casting details beyond Lynskey. The greenlight establishes intent, not completed production.

Lynskey will also serve as an executive producer, according to Paramount+. She will therefore carry both a performance credit and an executive-producer credit on the same project.

Paramount+ names three creators, all serving as executive producers:

  • Anya Beyersdorf: “Fake,” “Apple Cider Vinegar” and “Fires.”
  • Daina Reid: “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Shining Girl” and “Run Rabbit Run.”
  • Deb Balderstone: “Dustfall,” “Ticket to Paradise” and “Palm Beach.”

Beyersdorf will write with Dianne Taylor, whose credits include “Dustfall” and “After the Party,” and Belinda Chayko, whose credits include “Dustfall” and “Fires,” according to Paramount+. Reid will direct all six episodes.

Xavier Marchand will executive produce, as will Sophia Mogford for Paramount+. Soapbox Pictures will produce the series.

Beverley McGarvey, president of Network 10 and head of streaming for Paramount Australia, framed the project in promotional terms:

“This is an ambitious series that brings a gripping real-life story that captivated Australia and the world to the screen with the scale, quality and creative vision audiences expect from Paramount+.”

“It is a powerful addition to our growing slate of premium storytelling, and we are delighted to partner with such an exceptional creative team to share it with viewers around the world. We are also thrilled to welcome Melanie Lynskey, whose remarkable talent will be integral to the series both on screen and as an Executive Producer.”

McGarvey’s language sets a broad promotional promise. The announcement offers firmer specifics about personnel and scale than about execution. It does not say whether the production will use court records, interviews or archival material, or how it will distinguish documented events from dramatization. That omission matters in a drama built around toxic mushrooms, convictions and a real person’s life.

Paramount+ says Lynskey currently stars in “Yellowjackets,” which is entering its fourth and final season. The company says she has received two Emmy nominations for outstanding lead actress in a drama for her work on the series. It also records a 2023 nomination for her guest appearance in HBO’s “The Last of Us.”

Her listed television credits include “Two and a Half Men,” the true-crime drama “Candy,” “Togetherness” and “Mrs. America.” The announcement says Gersh represents her.

What does this change for audiences?

For Lynskey, the change is concrete: a starring role now comes with an executive-producer credit on a six-episode limited series.

For Paramount+, the project adds “Yellowjackets” star Melanie Lynskey and the Erin Patterson case to the premium slate McGarvey described.

For viewers, it changes the production pipeline rather than the viewing calendar. Paramount+ announced no premiere date or release window.

Before any episode reaches an audience, three practical tests remain: whether the scripts follow the announced 97-day span, how the production distinguishes fact from invention, and whether the named team can deliver all six episodes. The next disclosure that matters is a script and release schedule; Paramount+ has supplied neither.
