Director Michael Mann shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was 83. The wound was superficial. He's being released.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. at the Range L.A., per TMZ, which first reported the news. The firearm discharged while Mann was holstering it. LAPD confirmed the filmmaker was in stable condition at the time of the call.

His representatives kept it brisk. "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann," they said in a statement. "He was treated and is being released."

That's the whole statement. No spin, no elaboration. Just the facts, delivered the way Mann shoots a scene: flat, fast, no wasted motion.

Who is Michael Mann?

Mann built his reputation on precision — on screen, at least. He directed "Heat," "Thief," "Manhunter," "Collateral" and "The Insider." His last film was 2023's "Ferrari," a sports biopic starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura.

There's a certain irony available here. The man who staged cinema's most studied bank-robbery shootout, the famous downtown L.A. gun battle in "Heat," couldn't get a holster to cooperate. But that observation belongs to the reader, not to this column.

What happens to 'Heat 2'?

Mann is currently at work on "Heat 2," the long-awaited sequel to his 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The original, a box office hit, pitted LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Pacino) against professional thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) in an explosive Los Angeles face-off.

Mann adapted the screenplay from the 2022 novel of the same name, co-written with Meg Gardiner. The project works as both sequel and prequel, tracing the early lives of Pacino's and De Niro's characters. The expected cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Adam Driver.

The director has been eloquent about returning to the material. "The characters of 'Heat' are so alive to me," Mann said during a 2025 masterclass at the Lumière Festival in France. "An idea occurred to me, based on the rapport between two lethal adversaries, Pacino's Hanna and De Niro's McCauley, about how to do both before the events of 'Heat' and after."

What's the outlook?

A superficial leg wound is unlikely to slow an 83-year-old who has kept a film of this scale moving through development, casting and a 2025 press circuit. His reps say he was treated and released.

Expect "Heat 2" to proceed. The gun range, presumably, will not be a location.
