Disney's live-action "Moana" begins streaming on Disney+ on Oct. 21. The film arrives on the platform after a theatrical run that, for once, made a reviewer smile.

Catherine Laga'aia makes her film debut as Moana of Motunui. Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui. The pair voyage to restore the heart of Te Fiti (a greenstone relic central to Pacific creation mythology) and lift a blight from Moana's island.

Rena Owen plays Gramma Tala. John Tui plays Chief Tui, Moana's father. Frankie Adams plays Sina, her mother. Jemaine Clement voices Tamatoa, the polished-coconut crab villain.

Thomas Kail directs. Jared Bush and Dana Ledooux Miller wrote the screenplay. Mark Mancina composes the score. Lin-Manuel Miranda contributes songs.

What does the Variety review actually say?

Variety's film critic Owen Gleiberman has called "Moana" the best Disney live-action remake to date. His review pushes back hard against a tired formula.

"'Moana' is a Disney live-action remake that escapes the Disney live-action remake blues — in fact, it soars above them," Gleiberman wrote. "It's the best of these movies I've seen."

He then laid out the case against the cycle itself. "These movies add nothing (except to Disney's revenues)," he observed.

He called the broader category "an entire genre in which the definition of the genre is that it's completely and totally unnecessary."

What does he concede?

He conceded one exception, in unusually warm terms. "But in the case of 'Moana,' for maybe the first time, if you told me that a child who'd never seen the animated version was going to see the remake, I'd say, 'All good,'" Gleiberman wrote.

He added: "Because the new 'Moana' truly delivers 'Moana': the beauty, the comic personality, the fairy-tale enchantment."

Who else shows up?

The supporting creature roster includes:

  • Pua, the pet pig
  • Heihei, the addled rooster
  • The Kakamora, the diminutive coconut-armored pirates
  • Te Kā, the molten lava creature

Why does the streaming date matter?

Oct. 21 places "Moana" in the pre-Halloween family-viewing window. The slot sits two weeks before the studio's prestige push begins (the November-December corridor when studios typically release awards contenders).

The streaming premiere puts the title in front of Disney+ subscribers who skipped the theatrical run. It also gives families a tested property in a high-traffic window, just before the holiday season begins.

For Disney, a remake that even one major critic defends outright is, at this point, a small marketing asset. The studio has spent years watching its remake slate get savaged. Gleiberman's qualified approval counts as a useful counter-citation.

Disney, in short, has a remake the critics broadly accept. That alone justifies a streaming release.
