Noah Wyle was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026, receiving the magazine’s annual distinction for the first time. People traces the actor’s television work in emergency rooms to 1994, when he appeared as John Carter, a medical student and doctor, on NBC’s ER.
What changes for Wyle?
The first change is concrete: People has added its 2026 distinction to a television career that already includes three Golden Globe nominations for ER, two Emmy wins for The Pitt and a 2026 Golden Globe. The practical effect remains uncertain in Wyle’s own account.
In his People interview for the prize, Wyle said he was in disbelief when he received the news. “I thought that sounded like a prank — just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me,” he said.
In the same interview, he added: “I hope this changes everything. I hope it’s just wine and roses, milk and honey from here on out. [Laughs] No, I don’t, but I am going to take a lot of ribbing from friends and family for sure.”
That contrast separates People’s popular-culture honor from the dramatic work behind Wyle’s awards record. His two Emmys and Golden Globe came through The Pitt, while the magazine’s designation reflects his wider public profile.
ER built the profile
People introduced Wyle to television audiences as medical student and doctor John Carter on NBC’s ER, alongside George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield and Julianna Margulies.
People noted that Wyle had never won the designation before. Over the run of ER, he earned three Golden Globe nominations and five Emmy nominations.
People reported that at the January AARP Movies for Grownups Awards, Clooney joked that the organization should do a “sexiest man still alive” issue, saying that he “would nominate Noah Wyle as the first guy… When I grow up, I want to be Noah Wyle.”
The Pitt brought the awards
Sixteen years after the ER finale aired in 2009, People described Wyle’s return to a hospital in HBO’s The Pitt. There, he played disgruntled attending physician Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.
People reported that his portrayal of the doctor across the show’s two seasons won him the Golden Globe for best performance by a male actor in a television series, drama in 2026. It also brought him back-to-back Emmy awards for best actor in a drama series in 2025 and 2026.
Season 3 of the medical drama is set to premiere in January 2027, keeping Robinavitch, the role behind those three major awards, in public view.
A designation in its 41st year
People launched the annual Sexiest Man Alive contest in 1985, with Mel Gibson as its founder; the 2026 award marks the magazine’s 41st year of the designation.
Wyle succeeds Jonathan Bailey, whom People named Sexiest Man Alive for 2025; Bailey, the star of Wicked, was the first openly gay man to receive the designation.
People placed Wyle among previous winners, including:
- Patrick Dempsey
- Chris Evans
- Paul Rudd
- Michael B. Jordan
- John Legend
- Idris Elba
With Season 3 of The Pitt set for January 2027, Wyle’s first year carrying People’s designation will overlap with the role that brought him two Emmys and a Golden Globe.
