Parquet Courts frontman Andrew Savage has launched a new band, Iconic Fugues, and released its first track, "2025 Dream/2025 Blues," today.
The two-pronged song pairs a dream and a blues — a rose and a thorn of the past year, as the release frames it. Savage describes the piece as "about a guy who wakes up from a dream only to be confronted with a series of increasingly consequential, harsh realities."
Despite that dire synopsis, Savage does not hear the song as a downer. "As I write this all out it sounds bleak, but I don't find it to be a bleak song," he said. "I think it's just amazing the way a fun guitar solo can draw a bit of sun out from behind the clouds."
Who is in Iconic Fugues?
Iconic Fugues came together sometime after Savage released his most recent solo album, Several Songs About Fire, in 2023. The group's final lineup "is still being decided," Savage told Shaad Magazine this week.
A recent performance by the Marseille-based band featured two named collaborators:
- Dylan Hadley, who played with Savage on Several Songs About Fire
- Santiago Aldunate of the psych-rock band Hantayo
The project remains, by Savage's own account, a formation in progress rather than a fixed ensemble.
Why a new band instead of a solo record?
Savage drew a clear line between his solo work and band chemistry. "There's a difference between a solo record and a band record that I can't quite put my finger on, but it's just one of those things that you know when you hear it," he told Shaad Magazine.
His relocation drove the change. "I've been in France for four years, in Marseille for almost three, and I've got people here…," he said. "My life has changed, and so the music has changed, and I guess I needed a new name to sort of inaugurate that change, you know?"
What about Parquet Courts?
Savage addressed the status of his long-running group directly. Parquet Courts, he said, are "not active at the moment, but still a band."
For now, "2025 Dream/2025 Blues" stands as the first document of the new chapter — a single that suggests Iconic Fugues will take shape in public, one performance and release at a time.
