A researcher has identified 12 unpublished compositions and 17 unperformed arrangements by Tom Jobim, drawn from digital manuscripts held at the Instituto Antonio Carlos Jobim. The find comes two years before the composer's centenary on 25 January 2027.

Gabriel Gonzaga, 38, will collect the discoveries in a book titled Na solidão da noite — Inéditas de Antonio Carlos Jobim, scheduled for release next year. The research began during work on an earlier volume published in 2021, when Gonzaga consulted documents belonging to the singer Sylvia Telles.

What did Gonzaga find?

The 12 works include Impossível, a collaboration with Alcides Fernandes probably written between 1950 and 1951 and never recorded. Another is Na solidão da noite, composed around 1954 for Lúcio Alves.

The latter song has a partial recorded history. Agostinho dos Santos registered it in 1960, but with a different arrangement and outside the composer's official discography.

Gonzaga catalogued more than 300 manuscripts produced between 1953 and 1961. The 17 unused arrangements were prepared for artists including Orlando Silva, Dalva de Oliveira and Osny Silva. One version of Foi a noite, written with Newton Mendonça, was prepared for Osny but never used.

What do the manuscripts reveal about Jobim's method?

The study shows Jobim recycled material from early works into later hits. Elements of Ano novo, vida nova (1953 or 1954) reappear in Estrada do Sol, his partnership with Dolores Duran. Notes from Dois sambas simplex, written between 1955 and 1957, show similarities to Wave, released the following decade.

Analysis of Desafinado manuscripts shows erased double bass and cello parts, suggesting the composer was seeking a lighter sonority. In plain terms, the archive documents Jobim editing himself toward the transparent sound that defined bossa nova.

Will the music be heard?

Gonzaga intends to record the songs. He is currently seeking funding to hire an orchestra of 25 musicians. The book is in final preparation and has no publishing contract yet, which leaves both the print edition and any recordings dependent on financing the project has not secured as of now.

If funding arrives, the recordings would give listeners the first documented performances of works Jobim wrote more than 70 years ago.
