Robby Hoffman Lands Second Netflix Special, Set for 2027 Premiere

Programme

  1. Hoffman's second Netflix special is set to premiere in 2027.
  2. Her first Netflix hour, "Robby Hoffman: Wake Up," premiered in 2025 and was directed by John Mulaney.
  3. She received an Emmy nomination in 2025 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for HBO's Hacks.
  4. Rotten Science, run by Matthew Vaughan, will produce; the same shop is backing Michael Che's Netflix special and Whitmer Thomas' HBO hour.
  5. Variety named Hoffman to its 10 Comics to Watch list in 2025.

Robby Hoffman will deliver her second Netflix hour in 2027, the streamer confirmed this week, re-teaming with director John Mulaney three years after her debut special landed.

Who is steering the second hour?

Mulaney will again direct. He directed "Robby Hoffman: Wake Up," which premiered on Netflix in 2025. Press materials from that announcement quoted Mulaney saying: "No one has owned a stage like her since James Brown." The line has aged better than most press quotes — Variety named Hoffman to its 10 Comics to Watch list that same year.

What else is on her plate?

Hoffman's slate outside stand-up is busy. She picked up an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Randi on HBO's Hacks. She now leads HBO's Steve Carell comedy Rooster. She appeared opposite Michelle Williams in the FX limited series Dying for Sex.

She is also developing a project called UnEntitled, writing and executive producing, with a starring role attached.

Her additional streaming footprint includes:

  • Netflix's Canadian sitcom Workin' Moms
  • John Mulaney's live show Everybody's Live With John Mulaney
  • Headlining slots at Netflix Is a Joke, the company's biennial festival

Who is producing?

Rotten Science, the stand-up production house run by Matthew Vaughan, will produce the 2027 hour. The same shop is behind the recently announced Michael Che special for Netflix and Whitmer Thomas' new hour for HBO. Vaughan is betting on a clustered roster — three specials across two streamers in one cycle.

Why does a second hour matter here?

First specials are auditions. Second specials are contracts. Hoffman's leap from a 2025 debut to a greenlit 2027 return inside two years places her inside the small cohort of comics Netflix has chosen to double down on, not merely test. The Mulaney pairing (writer, director, host, gatekeeper) keeps the brand consistent, while Rotten Science handles the studio mechanics.

What could go wrong, or right?

The risk is tonal overlap. Wake Up leaned on what critics called her "riled-up kvetching," a delivery style that fans compare to a young, queer Larry David — a flattering but narrowing frame. If the second hour stays inside that lane, the special inherits a built-in audience. If it widens, the same audience may not return. Either direction reads as a deliberate choice by 2027.

For now, the resume reads heavier than the hour count: one streaming special to date, one Emmy nod, two active HBO series, a developing show, and a second Netflix deal already on the books. The next data point is the room and the tape. Hoffman's stand-up is the product; everything else is pipeline.

Netflix has not yet announced the recording venue, taping date, or a working title for the 2027 special.
