Robert Pattinson will receive the 40th American Cinematheque Award on Feb. 9, 2027, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The honor caps a two-decade career and arrives in the middle of the actor's busiest stretch yet.

American Cinematheque board chair Rick Nicita announced the selection and framed it in terms of range. "Rob has built an extraordinary career defined by his unwavering dedication to his craft, fearless creative choices and remarkable versatility as an actor," Nicita stated. "From his collaborations with some of cinema's most visionary filmmakers to his ability to captivate audiences in major studio blockbusters, Rob has continually challenged expectations and demonstrated the power of great storytelling."

Nicita added: "Rob is the perfect choice to receive this award and join our esteemed list of artists who not only love cinema but continue to have a deep impact on our industry."

Why Pattinson, and why now?

The date matters. Pattinson's 2026 slate alone lists four films across four radically different registers:

  • The dark romance "The Drama," opposite Zendaya
  • The villainous Atinuous in Christopher Nolan's epic "The Odyssey"
  • "Primetime," in which he plays "To Catch a Predator" journalist Chris Hansen — also the debut film from his production company, Icki Eneo Arlo
  • A shape-shifting assassin in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Three"

He is currently in production on Matt Reeves' "The Batman: Part II," reprising his dual role as Batman and Bruce Wayne.

That run is typical of a filmography that runs from franchise breakout to auteur vehicles: the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" franchises sit alongside Robert Eggers' "The Lighthouse," the Safdie brothers' "Good Time," Bong Joon Ho's "Mickey 17," "Die, My Love" with Jennifer Lawrence, and Nolan's "Tenet." Few actors of his generation move as freely between studio blockbusters and festival-rooted cinema.

What happened to the original ceremony?

Ryan Gosling was previously selected as the 40th honoree. A scheduling conflict with the gala — originally set for Nov. 2 — forced the event's postponement to 2027, and Pattinson now takes the slot. Nicita noted the organization is "thrilled that his filming schedule has allowed us the opportunity to recognize his exceptional contributions to film."

Pattinson joins a roster that includes Michael B. Jordan — last year's recipient and the eventual best actor Oscar winner — Eddie Murphy, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Jodie Foster, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman and George Clooney. Washington is also Pattinson's co-star in the upcoming film "The Take."

Where does the money go?

The annual gala functions as the American Cinematheque's principal fundraiser. Proceeds support the nonprofit's year-round programming at three venues: the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, the Los Feliz 3 Theatre in Los Feliz, and the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

With the ceremony still more than a year out, Pattinson's intervening calendar — including "The Batman: Part II" — will keep him in headlines until the Beverly Hilton tribute lands.
