Sadie Sink is in talks to star in and produce "The Guest," a feature adaptation of Emma Cline's 2024 novel for A24 and Square Peg, with Lorene Scafaria in negotiations to direct.
The adaptation is in early development. A24 and Square Peg are negotiating to produce the project, with Scafaria in talks to helm. Deadline first reported the news.
What is "The Guest" about?
Cline's novel, published by Penguin Random House in 2024, follows what its publisher describes as "a calculating grifter navigates the treacherous world of Summer in the Hamptons." The book was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner Award and named a Belletrist Book Club pick. The New Yorker, Time, NPR, and The Washington Post included it on their best-of-year lists, alongside more than a dozen other publications.
The book is Cline's third novel following "The Girls" (2016) and "Daddy" (2020).
Who is Lorene Scafaria?
Scafaria wrote and directed "Hustlers" (2019), "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" (2012), and "The Meddler" (2015), and adapted the screenplay for "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" (2008). On television, she directed episodes of "New Girl" and "Succession," earning a DGA Award nomination and a Primetime Emmy nomination for the latter.
She currently serves as executive producer and director on HBO's "I Love LA." Her directing credits track the kind of character-driven projects that have defined the prestige end of the 2010s and 2020s.
What has Sink done lately?
Sink recently appeared as Jean Grey in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which became the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history after opening in July. She also starred in the Oscar-winning "The Whale," a recent West End production of "Romeo and Juliet," and earned a Tony nomination for Broadway's "John Proctor is the Villain."
She is next set to star in Marvel's "X-Men" reboot, directed by Jake Schreier and currently dated for May 5, 2028.
Her recent work crosses a broad stretch of contemporary Hollywood: prestige streaming drama on "Stranger Things," independent film, theater, and franchise tentpole. A Hamptons-set literary thriller would extend that range further.
Who represents the parties?
- Sink: WME, Peikoff Mahan, and imPRint
- Scafaria: UTA and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern
No release date, additional cast, or production start has been announced. Whether the adaptation preserves Cline's interior monologue — central to the novel's psychological register — will likely determine how the film negotiates its source material.
