Shudder Acquires Rebekah McKendry's Vampire Horror 'Sundown'

Shudder has acquired the rights to "Sundown," a new supernatural horror feature from director Rebekah McKendry, Variety reports exclusively.

The film follows three generations of women who reunite in a remote cabin to avenge a loved one's death. According to the official logline, they soon "discover their captive isn't who he seems to be, and his family is closing in, waiting for sundown."

The cast is led by Olwen Fouéré ("The Watchers," "Mandy"), Camille Sullivan ("Shelby Oaks"), Summer H. Howell ("Carrie"), Daniel Bernhardt ("The Matrix Reloaded," "Nobody 2") and David Alpay ("From"). Supporting roles go to Kyle Mac ("Reacher"), Elisa Paszt ("Monica's News"), David Ian McKendry, Junko Bailey ("The Grudge") and Megan Best ("Elevator Game").

McKendry grounds the project in personal territory. "The town in 'Sundown' feels very much like the hometown of my youth, and its family squabbles are ones I know all too well," she said in a statement. "I am both a daughter and a mother, and this film allowed me to explore female relationships inspired by my own life while celebrating my deep love of '80s vampire movies. Add monsters, revenge, and a sharp dose of acerbic wit, and this became a passion project for me."

The shoot tested that passion. "Even while trudging through two feet of snow in temperatures as low as -40 degrees, our cast, crew, and producers never stopped giving this film everything they had," McKendry said.

Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry, who previously collaborated with the director on her 2022 feature "Glorious," wrote the screenplay. Slash of Guns N' Roses serves as executive producer under his BeserkerGang label. Producers include Pasha Patriki of Hangar 18 Media alongside Raven Banner's Michael Paszt, Andrew Thomas Hunt and James Fler.

Mark Ward of IFC Entertainment Group, who negotiated the deal on Shudder's behalf with Michael Paszt of Raven Banner, framed the acquisition in emphatic terms. "'Sundown' is ferocious, smart and completely unafraid to have a great time with horror," Ward said. "Rebekah yet again proves that she can sustain a killer tone that balances brutal thrills and genuine supernatural menace, delivering the kind of wild ride that stays with you. We knew immediately that this was a film Shudder audiences would embrace."

The acquisition marks another genre pickup for the horror-focused streamer and reunites McKendry with the screenwriting team behind "Glorious." Shudder has not yet announced a release date for "Sundown."
