NBC's upcoming comedy "Sunset P.I." has cast five guest stars: Spencer Moss, Nelson Franklin, Patrick Gallagher, David Paymer and Wrenn Schmidt. The series, led by Jake Johnson, premieres in February.
"Sunset P.I." is a single-camera workplace comedy that follows Mickey Wilder (Johnson), a private investigator employed by a past-its-prime detective agency in Hollywood. Johnson is joined by previously announced cast members Jane Levy, Langston Kerman, Mary Shalaby and Keith David.
Per the new character descriptions, Moss — known for "She's Fine" and "Doctor Odyssey" — will play Aylie, Mickey's technologically savvy 14-year-old niece. Franklin ("Veep," "The Social Reckoning") will play Kyle, an accountant at a large bio-tech company. Gallagher ("Big Sky," "Joe Pickett") is Garr, an LAPD detective on a murder scene. Paymer ("Dave," "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel") will portray Irvin Mandrake, a big-wig movie producer who had blockbuster hits in the 1980s. Schmidt ("For All Mankind," "Nuremberg") will play Cynthia, a mysterious woman with sinister intentions.
NBC announced it was picking up "Sunset P.I." to series in May. The series hails from writers and executive producers Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, who worked together on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." The pilot was directed by the Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces.
Moss is represented by CESD and Industry Entertainment; Franklin by CAA, Artists First and Hansen Jacobson Teller; Gallagher by TalentWorks and Vanguard Management; Paymer by Stride Management and Independent Artist Group; and Schmidt by Greenlight Management, Innovative Artists and Peikoff Mahan.
The February premiere will mark the first test of whether the "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" producing team and Johnson's comedic persona can translate into a broadcast hit for NBC's comedy slate.
