Shudder has dated "In a Violent Nature: Part 2" for February 12, 2027 — Valentine's Day weekend, and the same frame as Greta Gerwig's "Narnia" movie. The streamer announced the release at its New York Comic Con panel, where Ry Barrett, who plays the masked killer Johnny in both films, made a surprise appearance.
The sequel continues a franchise that started as a genuine indie success. The 2024 original, from Independent Film Company and Shudder, grossed $4.5 million globally. It followed a killer whose body returns as a vengeful spirit, fixed on recovering a locket buried with him.
What changes in the sequel?
The new film picks up immediately where the first ended. Johnny returns and keeps rampaging — this time toward a summer camp, where a young, outcast camper must spend the night with his counselor sister and her friends at their annual end-of-season party.
Two things expand along the way:
- Johnny's lore gets deepened.
- The kills, per the announcement, get more intense.
The original stood out for a structural trick: it told the horror story from the slasher's perspective, not his victims'. One of our writers called its extreme violence "oddly comforting" — your mileage may vary, but the perspective shift is what made the film land.
Who's making it?
Nate Wilson and Chris Nash co-direct; Nash also wrote the script. Peter Kuplowsky, Shannon Hanmer and Nash produce.
The sequel was first teased in February of this year, and Fantastic Fest attendees got a first look last month. The film itself was greenlit shortly after the original's 2024 success — a fast turnaround by franchise standards.
What does this change for horror scheduling?
It puts a blood-soaked indie slasher directly opposite one of the biggest studio releases of 2027. Shudder is betting audiences want counter-programming on a date weekend, the same logic that has fueled horror's strong Valentine's-adjacent openings before.
Independent Film Company has been busy beyond this franchise. This year it also released the killer shark thriller "Chum," "Faces of Death" and "Night Nurse," and, as IndieWire first reported, produced Josh Giuliano's film "River," which then flipped to Universal Pictures and Blumhouse as those companies hunt for their next "Obsession."
With a locked date, a first look already screened and a Comic Con reveal behind it, "Part 2" now has a clear runway to its February 2027 release.
