The Staatsoper Unter den Linden has extended the contracts of Artistic Director Elisabeth Sobotka and General Music Director Christian Thielemann until July 31, 2034.
The Board of Trustees of the Oper in Berlin Foundation approved both extensions at its meeting on Oct. 8, 2026. On Oct. 14, Stefan Evers, Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, signed the contracts together with Sobotka and Thielemann. Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture and Media, attended the signing.
The decision secures the house's leadership for nearly another decade. Both Sobotka and Thielemann took up their posts at the start of the 2024-25 season, which makes this extension an early and emphatic vote of confidence in a partnership still in its first years.
Sobotka framed the extension as a matter of continuity. In a statement she said, "It is an honour and a particular pleasure for me to be able to continue leading the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Berlin Senate and the Board of Trustees of the Berlin Opera Foundation, and I look forward to continuing to work with Christian Thielemann as General Music Director."
She added: "This continuity gives us the opportunity to build on the strong start to our trusting collaboration and to move forward into the future with renewed strength."
What does the extension change for the repertory?
Thielemann's own words point to the answer. In his statement he emphasized both the core German repertoire and new territory as the axis of his future work with the Staatskapelle Berlin.
"It is wonderful that I am able to continue my highly harmonious collaboration – both on a personal and artistic level – with the Staatskapelle Berlin and Elisabeth Sobotka," Thielemann said. "Over the past three seasons, we have already been able to explore a wide-ranging repertoire. It is therefore with great anticipation and excitement that I look forward to the opportunity to continue nurturing our core repertoire and to discover new works."
His reference to "the past three seasons" signals how quickly the foundation judged the artistic results. The Board of Trustees moved to extend the contracts after roughly three years of joint work, an unusually firm commitment this early in a tenure.
Who signed, and when
The paper trail of the decision is short and clear:
- Oct. 8, 2026 — the Board of Trustees of the Oper in Berlin Foundation approves both extensions.
- Oct. 14, 2026 — Stefan Evers, Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, signs the contracts with Sobotka and Thielemann.
- Witness — Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture and Media, attends the signing.
- Term — both contracts now run until July 31, 2034.
For Berlin's opera landscape, the extension stabilizes one of the city's three state-supported houses at a time when long-term institutional planning depends heavily on political goodwill and senate budgets, and it keeps one of Europe's most prominent conductor-intendant pairings in place at the house on Unter den Linden through the end of the next decade's first half.
