Tate McRae has released 'Housewife', a new single whose video sees her dance across a mansion, a yacht and various lavish landscapes while dismantling domestic stereotypes. At one point, she pushes a baby carriage filled with cash. Subtle, this is not.

The Canadian pop singer lays out her terms plainly on the track: 'I just wanna make a lot of money, be my own housewife/You could be the one I'm calling honey/Be my sex on the side.' The line inverts the usual arrangement. She keeps the money and the house; the man gets a nickname and a part-time role.

McRae teased the single last week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. 'I'm so excited. I haven't released in a while, and it's kind of about a woman who can't be contained,' McRae said. 'We shot it in the south of France, and it was so magical and so fun.'

What did the fans miss?

Easter eggs, apparently. Fallon asked whether McRae had hidden clues hinting at the song's release. Her answer was a small comedy of fandom misreadings.

'My fans in particular, we drop easter eggs all the time and they get none of them,' McRae replied. 'They'll always catch on to things that are completely wrong. They'll be like, 'She wore sunglasses, so her next single's called 'Sunglass!' Like, what? They never get the most obvious easter eggs.'

The most obvious one sat in plain view. During her Lollapalooza set in Chicago in August, the word 'Housewife' appeared on stage as the set began. 'This was literally in my Lolla set! It said, 'Housewife' when the set started,' McRae said. The audience, one assumes, was busy decoding sunglasses.

Where does the song sit in her run?

'Housewife' follows McRae's 2025 album, So Close To What, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 (the weekly US album chart). That marked her first Number One on the chart — a milestone, delivered with characteristic shrug.

Her Lollapalooza headline set remains the reference point for her current stagecraft. She closed with her hit 'Sports Car' and, for the finale, submerged herself in a massive tub of liquid gold before emerging coated in the metallic liquid like a trophy. A bath of gold as a closing image is a statement of intent; 'Housewife' is its recorded counterpart.

The new single extends the album's commercial moment into fresh material. If the carriage of cash is anything to go by, McRae's next era will be louder about the money — and, judging by her fans' detective work, far less secretly planned than she thinks.
