Variety reports that “The Holiday” returns to theaters on Dec. 11 for its 20th anniversary. The 2006 romantic comedy follows two women who exchange homes for the holiday, placing one in a Los Angeles house and the other in the snow-covered English countryside.

Variety lists Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black among the stars. The same report identifies Law as Graham, Iris’s brother, and Black as Miles, a film composer. Eli Wallach plays Arthur, the screenwriter who inspires Iris.

What does the return change for audiences?

For audiences, the practical change is a scheduled return to cinemas on Dec. 11, tied to the film’s 20th anniversary rather than to a new story. Variety gives no further details about the anniversary program. On its initial release, “The Holiday” grossed more than $200 million worldwide. The same report says the film “has maintained a strong, festive fandom ever since.”

The house swap at the center

The film’s official logline, quoted by Variety, sets out the initial problems:

Iris (Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Diaz), realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful.

The two women have never met and live 6,000 miles apart. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Iris moves into Amanda’s LA house in sunny California. Amanda arrives in the snow-covered English countryside. Both find a new romance, the last thing either wants or expects.

The story pairs Iris with Miles, a film composer played by Black, and gives Amanda a romance with Graham, Iris’s handsome brother. Arthur, the legendary screenwriter played by Eli Wallach, provides Iris with inspiration as she mends her heart.

Variety credits Nancy Meyers as the writer and director. Columbia Pictures and Universal Pictures produced the film in association with Relativity Media and Waverly Films Production. The home exchange links their separate journeys without requiring the women to meet first.

Apple TV’s limited series

Variety also reports that a limited series adaptation is in development at Apple TV. The series would focus on different characters, but center on two women, one British and one American. They would swap houses during the Christmas season and find love along the way.

The proposal retains the film’s house-swap premise while replacing its central pair. Variety names no cast, writer or release date for the series. Retaining the setup without retaining the central characters gives the project its main creative challenge. The film connects a home exchange to two stories of romantic recovery, while the series proposes the same arrangement for a new British and American pair.

For viewers, Dec. 11 is the fixed occasion. For Apple TV, the announcement leaves the cast and schedule open. The project’s next test is whether new central characters can carry the house-swap premise without Iris and Amanda’s established pairing.
