Lionsgate will open a stage adaptation of "The Housemaid" at Richmond Theatre on Sept. 14, 2027, before sending the production on a two-month tour of the U.K. The company announced the premiere date alongside plans for the adaptation, which draws on both Freida McFadden's best-selling novel and Paul Feig's 2025 feature film.

That film starred Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a troubled young woman who takes a job with a wealthy New York couple, Nina and Andrew Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. In their home, she uncovers a web of deception. Lionsgate describes the property as a "seductive psychological thriller." The screenplay for the feature came from Rebecca Sonnenshine, with Feig, Todd Lieberman and Laura Fischer producing.

Casting for the stage version has not yet been announced. That absence hasn't slowed the scheduling.

Who is making the stage version?

Bekah Brunstetter, whose credits include "Five-Star Weekend" and "Sirens," is writing the adaptation. Matthew Dunster, the director behind "2:22 A Ghost Story" and "The Hunger Games: On Stage," will direct. Melting Pot produces the stage show in collaboration with Lionsgate.

The pairing signals intent. Brunstetter knows her way around glossy, female-driven material for the screen; Dunster has form in turning known properties into durable West End-adjacent hits. "2:22 A Ghost Story" became something of a template for the celebrity-casting genre thriller, and "The Housemaid" sits squarely in that commercial tradition.

What else is happening with the franchise?

A feature film sequel, "The Housemaid's Secret," is currently in production. Lionsgate has planned a global theatrical release for December next year.

Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate's president for global products and experiences, framed the stage debut as part of a broader expansion. "With the stage play debuting next year and our sequel film in production, the momentum behind 'The Housemaid' franchise continues to grow," Brown said.

The timing is coordinated, in other words. A play opening in September 2027, a sequel arriving in theaters the previous December, and a bestselling novel still moving units — the franchise is running on three tracks at once. Hollywood's current theater economics, in which IP recognition drives ticket sales more reliably than playwrights' names, makes the logic plain.

Why Richmond before the West End?

The production opens at Richmond Theatre, a 1,400-seat venue outside central London, then tours for two months. Whether a West End transfer follows will depend on how the Richmond run and tour land; no transfer has been announced.

For now, the facts are these: a date, Sept. 14, 2027; a venue, Richmond Theatre; an adapter, Brunstetter; a director, Dunster; and a franchise with a sequel in production and a global theatrical release planned for December next year. Casting news, and any transfer chatter, will be the next markers to watch.
