Georgia Governor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms has named Tyler Perry to her transition team, less than a week after winning the 2026 gubernatorial election — and while the filmmaker faces $337 million in combined sexual assault lawsuits.

Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, made history on Tuesday night as the first Black woman elected governor of any U.S. state, and Georgia's first Black governor. By Friday morning's press conference, she had already announced Perry's appointment.

"Tyler Perry, an entertainment mogul who is also a huge philanthropic part of our Georgia community and owns Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta," Bottoms said in her announcement, quoting her own description of the pick verbatim.

What are the allegations against Perry?

Actor Derek Dixon, who appeared in Perry productions including the series "The Oval," sued Perry in June 2025. The suit alleges numerous instances of sexual battery and assault dating back to 2021.

According to the lawsuit, Dixon claims Perry has "been using his power and influence to molest, abuse, and sexually assault impressionable and vulnerable employees and actors who look to him for guidance and mentorship while pursuing their dreams." Dixon is seeking $260 million in damages and a jury trial.

A second suit followed in December 2025. Actor Mario Rodriguez, who starred in Perry's comedy-horror film "Boo! A Madea Halloween," filed a $77 million sexual battery lawsuit against Perry and the film's distributor, Lionsgate.

Rodriguez accuses Perry of unwanted sexual advances, sexual battery and sexual assault. He further claims Lionsgate ignored Perry's alleged predation. The case has a wrinkle, though: chummy text messages between Rodriguez and Perry, sent after the alleged misconduct, later surfaced.

Who is Keisha Lance Bottoms?

Bottoms arrives in the governor's mansion with a long résumé. She served as mayor of Atlanta, as a member of the Atlanta City Council, and as a senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement (the liaison office between the presidency and civic groups) under former President Joe Biden.

Her victory makes her Georgia's 84th governor. She takes office on Jan. 11, 2027.

Why does the Perry pick matter?

Transition teams shape an incoming administration's personnel and priorities, so the roster reads as a statement of intent. Choosing a studio owner facing two active sexual battery suits — one for $260 million, one for $77 million — invites exactly the scrutiny Bottoms received on Friday.

Perry's role also tests the entertainment industry's uneasy relationship with its accused moguls: he built Tyler Perry Studios into an Atlanta institution, and Bottoms clearly counts that philanthropic and economic weight as an asset. Whether voters and the courts agree is now a separate question.

Both lawsuits remain pending as Bottoms prepares to take office in January 2027, meaning Georgia's first Black woman governor may begin her term with her most famous transition appointent still litigating assault claims.
