On Oct. 30, “Án Mạng Karaoke” (“Karaoke Murder”) will open nationwide in Vietnam and in eight overseas countries during the same weekend. Its backers call the four-continent schedule a first for a Vietnamese film.

The release plan

  • Vietnam: “Án Mạng Karaoke” opens nationwide on Oct. 30. The announcement does not supply a release year.
  • 3388 Films: The U.S.-based specialty distributor will release the film in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Norway, Australia and New Zealand that same weekend, landing in time for Halloween.
  • Exclusive rights: 3388 Films holds exclusive international rights in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, plus Japan and Taiwan.

The announcement offers no screen counts, theater counts, presales or opening-week targets. Its “first” therefore describes release coordination, not measured audience reach.

Production and premise

“Karaoke Murder” marks Hoang Le’s first film as director. Director-producer Vo Thanh Hoa of 89s Group serves as creative director, Mai Bao Ngoc produces, and 89s Group and F35 Studio share the production credits.

The ensemble cast comprises Doan Thien An, Thanh Son, Dai Nghia, Van Dung, Phuong Dung, Tieu Bao Ngoc, Tuyen Map, Quynh Ly, Ta Lam and Trinh Thao.

Set on a mountain pilgrimage taken by a group of neighbors, the film follows a former journalist who must put her old investigative skills back to work after a widely loathed, karaoke-obsessed tycoon is killed overnight. With the group cut off from the outside world, suspicion falls on everyone.

Why karaoke carries the plot

The producers said they built the story around karaoke because of the place it holds in Vietnamese life. Singing sessions feature at weddings, birthdays, Lunar New Year and ordinary Sunday afternoons.

According to the same account, nearly every household owns a speaker and microphone. The producers also cite Vietnamese penalties for noise after 10 p.m. and describe karaoke as one of the most common causes of rows between neighbors.

They added that news outlets report karaoke disputes ending in tragedy every year. The announcement names no outlets and supplies no police or newsroom data to test that claim.

Nor does it cite a survey for the statement about household ownership. The rationale explains the producers’ choice, but the announcement presents it as assertion rather than evidence.

Vo’s framing is explicitly home-first. “We’re proud – but above all, grateful,” said Vo. “For years, our belief has been simple: ‘win at home first – then travel with your own voice.’ We make films for Vietnamese audiences before anyone else.”

Vo said 89s Group’s films had grossed more than VND600 billion ($23 million) at the Vietnamese box office between 2023 and 2026. The announcement does not itemize those films or document the total independently.

“That foundation gives us the confidence to step onto the world stage – not by imitating others, but with our own voice,” Vo said.

“I hope the Vietnamese diaspora will feel a little piece of home when they watch ‘Karaoke Murder.’ And I hope international audiences leave the theater a little more curious about Vietnamese cinema – and perhaps a little more careful the next time they pick up a microphone.”

The distributor’s claim

Thien A. Pham, founder of 3388 Films, said the company had previously distributed titles on four continents as part of their international rollouts. The announcement does not identify those earlier titles, leaving the comparison broad.

“Aligning an international release with a film’s local date is a significant breakthrough moment. It’s what we’ve advocated for years because we believe greater momentum can be generated for international films when local and international release dates sync up,” Pham said.

“It’s energizing to have gutsy partners, like the producers of ‘Karaoke Murder,’ as 3388 Films continues to redefine possibilities for Asian films.”

3388 Films has specialized in Asian content for more than 20 years. Its recent releases include “Mai,” which the distributor calls the first Vietnamese film to cross $2 million at the North American and European box office. It provides no country-by-country gross for that milestone.

What does the synchronized opening change for audiences?

The immediate change is when and where people can watch it. The film is set for cinemas in Vietnam and eight overseas countries within the same release window, with its domestic opening and international rollout aligned.

The commercial claim remains provisional. Without theater counts, advance sales or comparable opening-week figures, the announcement cannot establish how wide the release will be.

For 3388 Films, the synchronized date extends a distribution model it says it has pursued for years. For Vietnamese producers, it tests whether a home-market story can travel with its own voice. The test starts with a scheduling first, not a demonstrated box-office result.

The next evidence will be theater counts and opening-week grosses in Vietnam and the eight named overseas countries; without them, the synchronized launch remains a scheduling first rather than a demonstrated audience result.
