Vikas Bahl has completed the U.K. shoot of "Bolo Bolo Bolo," a coming-of-age musical drama set during the Punjabi music boom in early-1990s Britain. The film will reach cinemas in 2027.
Siddhant Chaturvedi, Jimmy Shergill, Mona Singh and Alizeh lead the cast. Katha Studios produces alongside Good Co, Fusion Flicks and Monk Films — four companies backing a story about a scene that, by the producers' own account, built itself far from the mainstream.
What is the film about?
The drama unfolds at the moment when young British musicians began mixing Punjabi beats with modern, bass-heavy production. They shaped that sound in makeshift spaces: garages, unlicensed radio broadcasts and shows away from the established circuit.
Bahl frames the story in those terms. He said the film centers on music, identity and belonging, in a period when a generation was forging a cultural identity of its own.
"The Punjabi music scene in 1990s Britain was full of energy, rebellion and an incredible spirit of self-expression," Bahl said. "It has been a wonderful experience bringing this world to life, and I look forward to audiences experiencing the film in 2027."
Alongside the music, the film deals with family ties, friendship, identity and the search for belonging, set against Britain's shifting culture at the time. The soundtrack draws on the sounds that drove the British Punjabi scene across that decade — a wide range, though no artists or tracks have been named yet.
What does the producer say?
Shibasish Sarkar, founder of Katha Studios, stakes the film's claim on cultural history rather than star power. "'Bolo Bolo Bolo' captures a unique cultural movement that brought together music, identity and a generation finding its voice," Sarkar said. "The film explores a fascinating chapter in the evolution of Punjabi music in Britain, and we are excited to bring this story to audiences. With Vikas Bahl at the helm and a talented ensemble cast, we look forward to the film's release in 2027."
The word "unique" is doing heavy lifting there. Bhangra and British Asian music from that era have been documented before, in archive footage and music journalism; what has not happened is a mainstream Bollywood-backed feature treatment of the scene. That is the gap "Bolo Bolo Bolo" aims to fill.
What is still unknown?
The announcement names no characters, no distribution partner and no release window beyond 2027. Whether the soundtrack uses original recordings from the 1990s scene or newly written material in its style remains unstated. Bahl's recent directorial record is also absent from the announcement, as is any budget figure.
What the project does have is a finished U.K. shoot, a four-company production coalition, and a release date two years out. The next test will be whether the film can carry a niche music history to a broad cinema audience when it arrives in 2027.
