Netflix and Shondaland have ordered a new limited series spinoff in the "Bridgerton" universe, this time focused on a young Lady Violet, the companies announced Thursday.
The project has no title yet. Netflix is calling it the "untitled Bridgerton project." The streamer said its rollout will follow the pattern of the previous spinoff, "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," which suggests an eventual title along the lines of "Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story" — though that remains unconfirmed.
Who is making the series?
Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers. Nardini produced "Queen Charlotte" and wrote on Rhimes' ABC series "Scandal."
Tom Verica will direct and executive produce. Verica's credits include "Bridgerton," "Queen Charlotte," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal." Longtime Shondaland creative partner Betsy Beers also joins as executive producer.
What will the show be about?
Netflix released a brief logline: "Similar to the massive global hit 'Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,' the series will chronicle the early life of a young Lady Violet and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton."
Who plays Lady Violet?
In the flagship "Bridgerton" series, English actress Ruth Gemmell plays Lady Violet Bridgerton, the widowed matriarch of the Bridgerton family. In "Queen Charlotte," a teenage Violet Ledger was played by Connie Jenkins-Greig.
It is unclear whether Jenkins-Greig will reprise the role, or whether any other stars of "Queen Charlotte" or "Bridgerton" will appear in the spinoff. No casting has been announced.
How big is the franchise?
The order lands while "Bridgerton" remains one of Netflix's strongest performers. Season 4 premiered at No. 1 on Netflix's Global English TV list. "Queen Charlotte," which ran for six episodes in 2023, debuted at No. 1 in 91 countries.
Season 5 of "Bridgerton" is currently in production in London. Its focus is Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza.
With a second spinoff now in development and the mothership series still shooting, Shondaland is positioning "Bridgerton" as a multi-series franchise for the streamer — and Lady Violet's origin story as its next chapter.
