Zubin Mehta Withdraws from Munich Concerts on Health Grounds

Zubin Mehta has withdrawn from his scheduled concerts with the Munich Philharmonic on October 7 and 8 due to health reasons, the orchestra announced.

The conductor, who holds the title of Conductor Laureate with the Philharmoniker, was forced to cancel his travel to Munich as planned. The orchestra broke the news in a message to its audience.

"Zubin Mehta, our Conductor Laureate, is unfortunately unable to travel to Munich as planned and conduct the concerts on October 7 & 8 due to health reasons," the orchestra stated.

Andrea Marcon will replace him on the podium at short notice. The program remains as scheduled.

"We are grateful to Andrea Marcon for stepping in at short notice and conducting the program as scheduled and we thank our audience for their understanding," the Philharmoniker wrote.

Marcon will appear alongside the orchestra's principal bassoonist Raffaele Giannotti. The orchestra extended its anticipation for the collaboration and its good wishes to the ailing maestro.

"We look forward to welcoming Andrea Marcon, together with our principal bassoon colleague Raffaele Giannotti, and send our very best wishes to Zubin Mehta for a speedy recovery," the message concluded.

No further details on Mehta's condition have been released, and the orchestra has not indicated whether the 89-year-old conductor's future engagements with the ensemble will be affected.
