Gillian Gilbert, New Order's longtime keyboardist, has revealed she is living with cancer. She shared a statement today intended, in her words, to "gently clarify a misunderstanding" stemming from a recent Rolling Stone interview with her bandmate and husband, drummer Stephen Morris.

The confusion began when Rolling Stone asked Morris whether he would attend New Order's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in November. "I've got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time," he told the magazine. Readers took the comment to mean that Morris himself was seriously ill.

Gilbert set the record straight. "Thankfully [Stephen] is well," she wrote. "It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer."

She continued: "We completely understand how the misunderstanding arose and simply wanted to ensure that the correct information was shared. We are enormously grateful for everyone's kindness and support and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment."

In her full statement, Gilbert also thanked those who had reached out after Morris's interview. "We have both been incredibly touched by all the kind words and well wishes," she wrote, signing off "Gillian xx."

The revelation comes months after New Order announced that Morris and Gilbert would not join the band on its imminent South American tour, which begins in São Paulo, Brazil, in late November. According to Rolling Stone, those dates will mark the first New Order shows ever performed without Morris.

The couple's absence coincides with a milestone for the band. Joy Division and New Order are being jointly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this November, after two prior nominations.

Gilbert's request for privacy as she continues treatment leaves open the question of whether either she or Morris will appear at the induction ceremony in November.
