Pete Byrne, vocalist of the British new wave duo Naked Eyes, died in Los Angeles on Sept. 14 after a brief illness. He was 74.

Byrne founded Naked Eyes in Bath in 1982 with his college friend Rob Fisher. The duo's debut album, "Burning Bridges," reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200, and across two studio albums released in 1983 and 1984, Naked Eyes landed four top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: the Burt Bacharach cover "Always Something There to Remind Me," "Promises, Promises," "When the Lights Go Out" and "(What) In the Name of Love."

The band never toured. It broke up after the second album.

Byrne's career extended well beyond those chart hits. He provided backing vocals on Stevie Wonder's 1985 hit "Part-Time Lover" and wrote songs for film, television and the Olsen twins.

The band's origins stretch back further than 1982. Born in Islington, North London, Byrne performed as one half of a duo with Jeff Starrs from 1976 to 1977. He then joined the band Studio from 1977 to 1979 alongside Clive Wright, Stash Huchrack and Richard Fenton. From 1979 to 1982, Byrne played in Neon, a group that included Fisher as well as musicians who would go on to form Tears for Fears: Neil Taylor, Manny Elias, Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal.

Fisher died in 1999. Byrne kept writing, recording and touring across the U.S. and internationally afterward. He released the solo album "The Real Illusion" in 2001, then reformed Naked Eyes in 2005.

The revived group stayed productive. It released "Fumbling with the Covers" in 2007, "Disguise the Limit" in 2021 and a remaster of the original self-titled album "Naked Eyes" in 2025 — a release that came just months before Byrne's death and capped a recording career spanning nearly five decades.

Byrne is survived by his siblings Eileen, Sandy, Carol and Steve; his three children, Merlin, Dylan and Chloe; and his ex-wife, Elena.
