Kneehigh's Tristan & Yseult has returned to the stage at the Theatre Royal Bath, and according to the Guardian's review, it remains "utterly irresistible."

The production blends circus mayhem, cabaret sexiness, comedy antics and medieval tragedy into what the reviewer calls a "heady mix" that has lost none of its charge.

Adapted and directed by Emma Rice, the show first opened in 2003 in the Cornish setting from which the legend of knights, love potions and infidelity originally arose. It earned cult status and, in the words of the review, "a breathless following of balloon-blowing audience participants." The production returned to equal acclaim for a 10th-anniversary outing in 2013, reviewed by the Guardian at the time.

Now it is back, in what the critic describes as "all its giddy, fourth-wall trampling glory, with its army of anorak-clad unloved, and its circus-tricked mayhem."

The cast features Edward Rowe as King Mark, Nandi Bhebhe as Yseult and John Leader as Tristan. Once again, the audience is invited to blow up balloons for the wedding of King Mark and Yseult, while Tristan "simmers with secret passion in the wings."

The revival confirms the durability of a show that has moved from Cornish origins to cult favourite to modern classic. For audiences in Bath, the Guardian's verdict suggests this latest outing keeps the production's reputation intact — and its balloons inflated.
