Disney has greenlit an animated television adaptation of "Artemis Fowl" for Disney Channel and Disney+. Author Eoin Colfer announced the project during the "25 Years of Artemis Fowl" panel at New York Comic Con.
Colfer will serve as executive producer alongside Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson. The series follows the 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, who "uncovers an underground world of armed and dangerous — and surprisingly high-tech — fairies as he launches a plan to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mom and save his family," according to the official logline.
Why the franchise matters
The first "Artemis Fowl" book appeared in 2001. Colfer followed it with ten additional novels, the most recent published in 2021. The series has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 48 languages.
A live-action film based on the first book debuted on Disney+ in 2020 to negative reviews. Disney removed the movie from the streaming service in 2023.
What Disney executives said
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, addressed the reboot's rationale directly: "For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer's 'Artemis Fowl' books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures."
Davis added: "Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis' world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years."
Colfer struck a personal note about the production team. "I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the 'Artemis Fowl' animation on screen," he said. "Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands."
What comes next
The animated format marks Disney's second attempt at adapting the franchise after the 2020 live-action misfire. No premiere date, episode count, or animation studio has been announced, leaving fans to watch for casting and release details as the series develops.
