Bill Nighy has joined the cast of Alfonso Cuarón's horror thriller series "Ascension" at Apple TV, Variety has learned. Nighy will star alongside previously announced lead Caitríona Balfe. Apple ordered the series in August.
Details of Nighy's role are being kept under wraps. The show draws on "Last Days," a novel by Adam Nevill.
What is 'Ascension' about?
The official logline follows Rose, played by Balfe, "a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others' truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath." The premise places the series squarely in cult-horror territory, filtered through Cuarón's signature prestige approach.
Where does this fit in Nighy's recent career?
The casting continues a busy run for the actor. Nighy was previously reported to guest star in "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" Season 2 at Paramount+. His recent television credits include "Ride or Die" and "Lazarus" at Amazon, plus "The Man Who Fell to Earth" at Showtime, now Paramount+. He is repped by Independent Talent in the U.K., UTA and Public Eye Communications.
His film résumé carries weight. Nighy earned Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for the 2023 film "Living." Earlier screen work includes the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, "Shaun of the Dead," "Notes on a Scandal" and "Love Actually." In short: a proven performer joining an already decorated creative team.
Who is making the series?
Alfonso Cuarón co-writes with his brother Carlos Cuarón, alongside Natalie Erika James and Christian White, both of "Apartment 7A" and "Relic." All four serve as executive producers.
- Natalie Erika James and Christian White act as co-showrunners.
- James serves as lead director.
- Balfe executive produces in addition to starring.
- Alfonso Cuarón executive produces through his Esperanto Filmoj banner, which holds an overall TV deal with Apple.
Esperanto Filmoj's Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz will executive produce. Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden executive produce for Anonymous Content. Anonymous Content produces the show, with Apple Studios serving as the studio.
The production stack matters. Apple TV+ has locked in an Oscar-winning filmmaker, an awards-nominated lead actor and a co-showrunning pair with horror credentials on a single series order placed in August. How the Church of Ascension storyline translates Nevill's novel to the screen will define whether the pickup pays off.
