Donald Trump published a 1,300-word Truth Social post about Bill Maher on Sunday after watching the comedian’s late-night HBO program, “Real Time With Bill Maher.” The post came a few days after their second dinner at the White House. Trump also told Maher: “Don’t Call Anymore.”
The post had two layers. Personal allegations about the meal opened the argument. Maher’s political comments and television appearances supplied its second layer.
Trump opened with the words, “Let’s talk about this COMPLETE AND TOTAL LOSER, Bill Maher,” before continuing with his complaints. He called “Real Time With Bill Maher” a “Low Rated Show” and said HBO, once a home for quality programming in his view, had lost its heat.
Trump claimed Maher had long wanted him as a guest, then said that would never happen. The capitals did not settle the argument. They raised its volume.
What did Trump say about the second dinner?
Trump said Stephen A. Smith and Kid Rock attended the latest dinner. The president alleged that Maher was drunk and carried a drink while touring the White House. He called Maher a “major POTHEAD” and said the comedian “looked like hell this time.”
Trump also said: “It didn’t last four hours, it lasted two hours, maybe less, and everybody was happy.” He added: “We have the timestamps. I learned nothing, and felt it was a waste of time.” The 1,300-word post was longer than the dinner Trump said lasted two hours, maybe less.
Trump assigned responsibility for both meetings to Chuck LaBella, Maher’s business associate, whom he said had worked as a “gofer” on NBC’s “The Apprentice.” According to Trump, LaBella and Kid Rock repeatedly pushed for a sit-down. LaBella phoned 10 times before they arranged the second dinner. Trump described his initial reaction as: “My first response was, ‘Fellas, this guy’s a Goofball.’”
Which of Maher’s comments did Trump dispute?
Trump disputed Maher’s on-air comments since the White House visit, including Maher’s claims about Trump’s approval numbers and support among Republicans. Citing CNN polling that he said put him at 98% to 99% within the party, Trump rejected those claims and defended his endorsement record.
He also objected to Maher’s views on Iran and accused him of lying about illegal voting in California.
Trump denied ever planning a pool for the White House press briefing room. “I am thinking about moving the Press, and putting them in a different location, but I will use that location for very badly needed space,” he wrote.
Trump praised former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt for appearing as a guest on “Real Time,” but called the person questioning her a “biased, dumb SLEAZEBAG.” He instructed Maher to switch off what he called his “Laugh Machine” and said he would ask Republicans to stop covering the comedian.
Trump then closed his media criticism with a categorical promise: “I never watched your show much, but I will never watch it again, because it is nothing more than FAKE NEWS that America, and the World, is unfortunately subjected to,” he wrote.
How did Maher describe the first dinner?
Maher first dined with Trump at the White House in late March 2025, after Kid Rock brokered the meeting. Maher then described the president on “Real Time” as “gracious and measured.”
Trump’s post turned the second dinner into a broader rebuke of Maher’s politics and television work. Maher’s earlier account of the first dinner supplied the counterpoint.
The next “Real Time” episode will test whether Trump’s call for Republicans to stop covering Maher changes the guest conversation.
