Programme

  1. "The Broad in Paris" runs April 21–August 30, 2027, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton.
  2. Some 164 works will travel to Paris, the largest Broad display outside Los Angeles.
  3. The Broad closes for renovation during the show and reopens in 2028 with 70 percent more gallery space.
  4. The Broad opened in 2015; the Fondation Louis Vuitton opened in 2014 in a Frank Gehry building.
  5. Curators include Joanne Heyeler, Suzanne Pagé, Ed Schad and Olivier Michelon.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton will mount "The Broad in Paris" from April 21 to August 30, 2027, with some 164 works crossing the Atlantic from Los Angeles. It will be the largest display of works from the Broad collection ever mounted outside its home city.

The timing is not accidental. The Broad, the Los Angeles museum opened in 2015 by billionaire Eli Broad and his wife Edythe, will be closed for renovation while the Paris show runs. When it reopens in 2028, it will have 70 percent more gallery space.

Who is on the roster?

The exhibition gathers international contemporary figures, including:

  • Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol
  • Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein and Ed Ruscha
  • Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and Cindy Sherman
  • Mark Bradford, Lauren Halsey and Sayre Gomez
  • Chris Burden, William Kentridge and Barbara Kruger
  • Sherrie Levine, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, Laura Owens and Kara Walker

Both buildings carry architectural distinction. The Broad collection sits in a structure by Diller Scofidio and Renfro, the first architecture firm to win a MacArthur Fellowship. The Fondation Louis Vuitton opened a year earlier, in 2014, in a Frank Gehry building; Gehry won the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honor, in 1989.

What does this change for Paris?

The show extends a Fondation Louis Vuitton tradition of exhibitions devoted to major institutions and collectors. Earlier entries included "Icons of Modern Art: Shchukin" (2016–17), "Being Modern: MoMA in Paris" (2017) and "The Courtauld Collection: A Vision for Impressionism" (2019). For Parisian audiences, it offers a concentrated survey of a single American collection rather than a loan here and there.

"We are two quite young institutions, both over a decade old, and we share a common purpose to present a deeper understanding of 20th- and 21st-century art," said Joanne Heyeler, the Broad's founding director and president, in press materials.

Suzanne Pagé, the Fondation Louis Vuitton's artistic director, praised the Broad's "clear and committed choices." She said the show builds on her institution's past exhibitions of artists such as Basquiat and Warhol and offers "an opportunity to discover new artists from the Californian art scene."

Who is curating it?

Heyeler and Pagé lead the curatorial team, joined by Ed Schad, the Broad's curator and publications manager, and Olivier Michelon, the Fondation Louis Vuitton's chief curator. A companion publication will illustrate every work in the show and include new commentary and essays.

The exhibition gives the Broad a global stage during its closure, and it gives the Fondation Louis Vuitton a fresh claim on the Los Angeles collection that Eli and Edythe Broad assembled over decades.
