  1. Grimes released 'Accelerando,' the lead single from her AI-themed album Psy Opera; no release date has been announced.

  5. In 2024, Grimes called AI an 'opportunity' for musicians on the PBS series A Brief History of the Future.

Grimes has released "Accelerando," the lead single from her forthcoming AI-themed album Psy Opera and her first new music announced at album length since 2020's Miss Anthropocene. The song, which may take its title from the 2005 science fiction novel of the same name, arrived without a release date for the full record.

The lyrics set the tone for what a press release describes as a wide-ranging project: "American lobotomy ya a a a/Accelerando/Better than a Van Gogh?/Eat me if u wanna ya yayaya."

What Will Psy Opera Cover?

According to the press release, the album will span everything Grimes observed during her years away from pop music: "From the AI debate to immoral wars to a bad ex to looksmaxers to the importance of religion, Psy Opera will cover everything Grimes witnessed as a woman of history during her hiatus from pop music."

Grimes first announced the record in April, in an interview with Interview magazine. At the time she confirmed the title Psy Opera and named two songs, "The Light Ages" and "Eve Is Online." "Accelerando" now joins that tracklist.

Alongside the single, she has:

  • Invited fans to an Instagram channel called "Eve Is Online"
  • Released a trailer for Psy Opera featuring a dystopian, AI-themed retelling of the Gospel of John

In the trailer, Grimes recites her rewritten scripture: "In the beginning was the word and the word was God. And man made God in his image, and God embraced man's nature. And Eden was forged in metal and artificial light rivaled the sun."

Why Artificial Intelligence Sits at the Center

Grimes has positioned herself as one of music's most vocal defenders of AI. In 2024, she appeared on the PBS series A Brief History of the Future, where she called AI an "opportunity" for musicians to show more of their skills.

"When everyone has the same tools that can make professional quality stuff, then you get to see the actual talent, like, really rise to the top," she said on the program.

She put that position into practice the year before. In 2023, Grimes offered 50 percent royalties to anyone who created a successful AI-generated song using her voice — an arrangement that turned her own vocals into an open resource for machine-driven production.

What Does This Change for Her Career?

Psy Opera marks two structural shifts for the artist. It is her first album in six years, following Miss Anthropocene in 2020. It is also her first release on her own label, Nazgul Recording LLC, which she launched after parting ways with Columbia.

The move to self-release gives Grimes full control over an album built around the technology she has spent years championing. With no release date announced, the single and trailer stand as the only public evidence of the record — and the clearest signal that it will be, as expected, a predictably strange one.
