Phoebe Bridgers performs "Lost Boys" and "Haunted" with Boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus in a new short film for A24's Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theater series, released after her three-night run at Barclays Center in September.
Director Lance Oppenheim, Bridgers' longtime friend, shot the session at the titular West Village off-Broadway theater. The film also features "On Video" — a song from the soundtrack of Oppenheim's film Primetime, in which Bridgers has a substantial acting role — performed with Ethan Gruska.
What does the film include?
The set list spans three songs and two collaborations:
- "Lost Boys" and "Haunted", performed with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus of Boygenius
- "On Video" from the Primetime soundtrack, performed with Ethan Gruska
The September Barclays Center residency formed part of Bridgers' ongoing phones-free Lost Tour. On the tour's first night at the venue, she brought Dacus and Baker onstage to play "Not Strong Enough" and "Cool About It".
Bridgers follows Tame Impala and Blood Orange in the Sound Check series. In short: this is her second short-film appearance of the season.
A busy season on screen and stage
The performance caps a return that followed four years of relative inactivity for Bridgers. She released her third album, launched a tour, and took a substantial role in Oppenheim's Primetime.
The Cherry Lane film is not her only screen credit this fall. She also appears in Invitation 13, the directorial debut of Conor Oberst, which premiered in Los Angeles in September — two film appearances in a single month for the singer.
What comes next for Bridgers and Oppenheim?
Bridgers and her opener Alex G wrap the U.S. leg of the Lost Tour this month. She then heads to the UK and Europe, with former Black Country, New Road frontman Isaac Wood providing support.
Oppenheim has his own premiere ahead. You Can See Everything, the documentary he co-directed with Nathan Fielder, follows disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes during her final days with her family before reporting to prison for fraud. It reaches theaters on October 16.
With the Lost Tour continuing into the UK and Europe and Oppenheim's Holmes documentary arriving within weeks, both collaborators keep high-profile releases on the calendar through autumn.
