Helena Guardans has been appointed the new president of the Fundació del Gran Teatre del Liceu, becoming the first woman to hold the post in the institution's history.
Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, announced the appointment. Guardans succeeds Salvador Alemany Mas, who led the Fundació for ten years.
The appointment received the backing of the public administrations that make up the Fundació: the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ministry of Culture, Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Provincial Council. The other members of the Board of Trustees also supported the decision.
Guardans takes office with a stated aim of preserving what has allowed the institution to grow while securing the stability needed to face future challenges.
She arrives with a career in business rather than opera administration. Guardans previously served as Director of Foreign Trade at Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas and as General Manager of the Grey communications group.
