Programme

  1. "Avengers: Doomsday" is set for theatrical release on Dec. 18.
  2. Renner said in a recent interview: "they didn't call me, so it's their fault."
  3. He has played Hawkeye across five MCU films and one Disney+ series.
  4. His 2023 Sno-Cat accident involved a snow plow weighing at least 14,330 pounds.
  5. In a 2025 Empire interview, Renner said he had recovered "more than 150%."

Jeremy Renner confirmed he will not reprise his role as Hawkeye in "Avengers: Doomsday," the Marvel Studios team-up arriving in theaters Dec. 18. His explanation, delivered in a recent interview, pointed the finger back at the studio.

"No, no, no, no. Not in that one," Renner said when asked if he was returning. "'Doomsday' I'm not in, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know… they didn't call me, so it's their fault. They're going to lose."

The interview also touched on the theatrical re-release of "Avengers: Endgame," the 2019 film Marvel reran ahead of "Doomsday's" December bow. Renner said he was excited about the return engagement.

What is Renner's MCU track record?

The actor has played Hawkeye across multiple films. His MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe, the long-running franchise of interconnected superhero films) appearances include "Thor" and "Captain America: Civil War," both brief cameos, plus "The Avengers," "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Avengers: Endgame."

He also led "Hawkeye," a one-season series on Disney+ (Disney's flagship streaming service).

Has he shut the door on the franchise?

No. In a 2025 interview with Empire magazine, Renner said he was open to anything Marvel sent his way, including a second "Hawkeye" season.

"I'm always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character," Renner told Empire. "I'm sure we'll end up doing Season 2 [of 'Hawkeye'], and do other things. And I'm happy to do it."

He added: "My body's getting ready for something like that. I don't know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights."

What actually kept him off the call sheet?

Not injury. Renner was run over by his own Sno-Cat, a tracked snow plow weighing at least 14,330 pounds, in a 2023 incident near his home. The injuries stacked up:

  • Eight ribs broken in 14 places
  • Right knee broken
  • Right ankle broken
  • Left tibia broken
  • Left ankle broken
  • Right clavicle broken
  • Right shoulder broken

In his Empire interview, Renner said he had recovered "more than 150%" and was ready to do his own stunts.

So what does this change for the film?

Practically, almost nothing yet. Marvel has not released a cast list for "Doomsday," so the studio can write Renner out, sidestep his absence, or quietly reverse course before Dec. 18. Renner's comments read more like a public nudge to his former employers than a contract dispute.

The December box office will test his theory: whether the Avengers actually can lose, or simply will.
