Sebastian Stan has not seen "Avengers: Doomsday" — and he expects the film to be "probably heartbreaking." Stan, who returns as Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, made the admission in an interview with Decider.
"I haven't seen the movie, and I don't know how it turned out," Stan said. "I'm sure it's going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We'll see who makes it to the next level."
That final line has already fueled fan speculation that more than a few beloved characters will not survive the "Avengers: Endgame" follow-up.
What did Stan say about the reunion?
Stan described the shoot as a reunion with longtime co-stars. "It was very nostalgic to look back and think about all of these years that we've known each other and grew up together," he said. "It's incredible in that way. It's been a family, and it never stops being that way."
Stan joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011 with "Captain America: The First Avenger." He went on to appear in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War" and other Marvel films.
Do other cast members understand the plot?
Stan is not the only "Doomsday" star in the dark. Alan Cumming, who reprises his role as the mutant Nightcrawler — a part he first played in 2003's "X2: X-Men United" — told SiriusXM: "To be honest, I don't fully understand the plot." Cumming added that most of his scenes were shot "in front of a blue screen."
Why is the script a mystery?
The confusion may trace back to how the film was made. Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo shot "Doomsday" with an unfinished script, according to Joe Russo's comments to the Associated Press last month.
"We always view the script as a living organism," Joe Russo said. "We're improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors. We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don't get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that's when the magic happens."
Stan's latest film, "Fjord," reaches theaters Friday. "Avengers: Doomsday" premieres theatrically on Dec. 18 — the date when audiences, and apparently much of the cast, will finally learn who makes it to the next level.
