Programme

John Goodman will play Jack, the father of Claire Danes' character Aggie Wiggs, in Season 2 of Netflix's "The Beast in Me," Variety has learned. Netflix announced the second season in September, with Danes confirmed to return as Aggie. Exact plot details remain under wraps.
The casting lands an 11-time Emmy nominee in a show that just proved its awards muscle. Goodman received seven of those nominations for his starring role in the sitcom "Roseanne," and he won the Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a drama in 2007 for "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip."
What does the casting change for the show?
It signals a family expansion at the center of the story. Aggie's father entering the frame gives the writers a new axis for the drama, though neither Netflix nor the producers have said how Jack fits into the Season 2 plot. For Goodman, it adds another prestige TV credit to a résumé that already runs deep.
Goodman recently reprised Dan Conner for the "Roseanne" revival, which was renamed "The Conners" and ran for seven more seasons. His other television work includes "The Righteous Gemstones" at HBO and "Damages" at FX. In film, he has collaborated repeatedly with the Coen brothers on features including "Raising Arizona," "Barton Fink," "The Big Lebowski" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" He has also appeared in "Digger," "Argo" and "Flight." He is repped by Gersh and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.
How did a 'limited series' get a second season?
Here's the mechanism. Netflix picked up "The Beast in Me" in 2024 as a limited series, and it campaigned as one at this year's Emmy Awards. That campaign worked: Season 1 star Matthew Rhys won outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series, and the show also took the Emmy for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special (original dramatic score).
But in the tradition of "Big Little Lies" and other nominally limited series before it, Netflix and the show's team began exploring a second season and opened a writers' room earlier this year. The September announcement made it official.
Who is running Season 2?
The creative team carries over with one structural shift:
- Season 1 showrunner Howard Gordon returns as co-showrunner.
- He shares the role with Season 1 executive producer Daniel Pearle.
- Gabe Rotter created the series and executive produces.
- Claire Danes executive produces in addition to starring.
Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Conan O'Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross and Jodie Foster also serve as executive producers. The series is produced by 20th Television.
The Goodman hire gives Season 2 a proven Emmy magnet opposite Danes and a returning Rhys, and it shows Netflix is willing to build on a limited series once the trophies arrive. Whether Jack becomes the show's next awards vehicle — or its dramatic engine — will start to become clear when production details surface.
