John Wilson, creator of HBO's How To With John Wilson, is directing a documentary on Harry Styles' 30-night residency at New York's Madison Square Garden, Variety reports. Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures and Styles himself are producing the film.

Wilson has been filming across the residency, which opened in August and closes at the end of this month. The run is the longest single-engagement residency Madison Square Garden has ever hosted. That record gives the project its spine: one artist, one venue, thirty nights.

Styles booked the residency to support his latest album, Kiss All of the Time. Disco, Occasionally, released in March. Since the record dropped, he has toured it, played the BRIT Awards and performed on Saturday Night Live.

What does this change for Wilson?

It's his first artist documentary. That's a real shift for a filmmaker known for wandering New York with a camera, turning small observations into essays on modern life. Here the subject is fixed, famous and tightly scheduled.

He isn't starting from zero in music, though. Last year Wilson directed the music video for Bon Iver's "Everything Is Peaceful Love," a track from the album SABLE, fABLE. That was a single commission; this is a feature-length portrait of one of pop's biggest draws, backed by a studio content group.

The pairing is the story's most interesting mechanism. Wilson's method (slow, curious, alert to strangers and awkward details) collides with a pop production built on precision. Fans of How To will reasonably ask how much of his voice survives a project with three producers and a superstar subject. The credits suggest Styles wants that voice in the room — his own company, Peanut World Pictures, is producing.

No release date or title has been announced. Expect the film to arrive with attention well beyond the Styles fanbase, since Wilson's HBO series built a following that rarely overlaps with arena pop.
