Mike Love, 85, performed with the Beach Boys in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday night — the band's first public show since July and the co-founder's first appearance after months of cancelled comeback tours.
Love, who has been "facing serious health challenges", according to accounts of the evening, was helped on to the stage at PNC Pavilion by his son Christian Love and by actor and band member John Stamos.
Stamos, long associated with the group both on screen and on stage, addressed the audience directly about Love's condition. He told the crowd that Love has "been going through some health issues … but he would not miss tonight".
Stamos also shared an emotional message describing Love as his "musical hero and mentor", according to the report of the show.
What happened at PNC Pavilion?
The Cincinnati date marks a milestone for a band that has spent months off the road. The Beach Boys had not played a public show since July, after a string of cancelled comeback tour dates.
Love's arrival on stage required physical assistance from two people:
- Christian Love, his son and a band member
- John Stamos, the actor who has performed with the group for years
Once on stage, Love fronted the band he co-founded, completing the return that Stamos had promised the audience he would not miss.
Why the comeback matters
Love co-founded the Beach Boys and remains the band's frontman. At 85, and in the midst of what Stamos described as serious health issues, his decision to appear in Cincinnati rather than cancel again signals the singer's determination to keep performing.
The show also reverses, at least for one night, a months-long stretch of scrapped comeback dates that had kept the group offstage since July.
Whether Love continues on the band's forthcoming dates has not been announced, but Saturday's appearance in Cincinnati — assisted, but on stage and performing — sets the terms for whatever comes next.
