The Beach Boys played their first public concert in three months on Saturday night at Cincinnati's PNC Pavilion, with an alarmingly frail Mike Love performing seated in a chair for the entire show.

Before the music began, longtime band guest John Stamos addressed the crowd and explained Love's condition. "[Mike] is here tonight," Stamos said. "He's been going through some health issues. He's had to cancel some shows. But he would not miss tonight. We sort of said 'stay home,' but he was like, 'No, I'm going to Cincinnati.'"

Stamos then walked Love onto the stage and seated him. He remained in the chair for the duration of the night.

Who sang what in Cincinnati?

The set followed the band's longtime practice of opening with "Do It Again," a song Love usually leads. Guitarist Brian Eichenberger sang it instead. Love's son and longtime bandmate Christian Love took "Surfin' Safari," another of his father's traditional numbers.

For the rest of the night, band members traded off lead vocals, with Mike Love joining on background vocals at times. He said little, but managed "thank you for showing up" after the opening song.

What do we know about Love's health?

The exact nature of Love's current health problems remains undisclosed. In June, during the band's European tour, he offered fans an explanation for his gaunt appearance: "Losing my sister, Maureen, on the first anniversary of cousin Brian's death, combined with my ongoing recovery from what started out as bronchitis, followed by COVID, has taken both an emotional and physical toll on me."

"I feel stronger every day physically, but I am heartbroken emotionally," Love wrote.

He powered through the following weeks, including a three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The band then cancelled its remaining shows through September. "We've been having a blast out there, and to keep the good vibrations going strong, we'll be taking a short break to recharge before getting back on the road in September," the band said in a statement.

September never materialized. Venues alerted fans the shows weren't happening "due to circumstances beyond our control" while the band stayed silent.

What happened before Cincinnati?

The group did play a private show on October 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach luxury hotel in Dana Point, California. Photos and videos showed Love performing in a chair there as well.

A planned return at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, set for October 9, was cancelled three days prior due to "unforeseen circumstances." The band also pulled an October 19 gig in Calgary.

What comes next?

The Beach Boys play Sunday evening at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Nothing else is booked until November 13, when they head to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. They wrap the year two days later at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol, Virginia — if those shows take place. The only concert scheduled for 2027 is a makeup date at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch, Alberta, on May 8.

Meanwhile, Love's former bandmate Al Jardine — the only other surviving member of the original lineup — performs the same evening 2,000 miles away at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, California. According to a recent interview with Valerie Simadis, Jardine will be joined by veteran Beach Boys members Blondie Chaplin, David Marks, and Bruce Johnston, and has invited Brian Wilson's first wife, Marilyn Wilson, who will presumably revive her original vocal part on the "Beach Boys Love You" deep cut "Let's Put Our Hearts Together."

Johnston's inclusion is notable: he left Love's incarnation of the Beach Boys in February after a six-decade run with the band. Relations between Love and Jardine have been strained for years.

"It's gonna be quite a show!" Jardine said. "I want cameos from each one of them."
