Netflix will release Joel Coen's gothic mystery "Jack of Spades" theatrically in the fall of 2027 before it streams on the platform. The date is the hardest fact in the deal, and it signals something specific: Netflix is committing to a cinema window for a film it could easily have kept exclusive.

The project marks Coen's return to the streamer after a detour. He took his 2021 solo feature "The Tragedy of Macbeth" to A24, but he last worked with Netflix on 2018's "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," which he co-directed with his brother Ethan Coen. Ethan doesn't share directing duties this time. He did, however, co-write the script with Joel, novelist and screenwriter Eleanor Catton, and playwright and screenwriter Conor McPherson.

What is 'Jack of Spades' about?

The film adapts Frances Frederica Montrésor's 1901 novel "The Alien: A Story of Middle Age." Its official logline reads: "A sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands."

The source novel centers on Esther Mordaunt, described as "now well into her thirties by the story's start." The book follows her evolving bond with Jasper, "a traveler with a vivid past and a talent for storytelling." Through his tales of sailing, revolutions and distant lands, the novel explores "how a single life can stretch across time, risk, and longing without losing its humanity." The book has been billed as "a thoughtful pick for readers who enjoy character-driven fiction with a touch of wanderlust and a battle between integrity and longing."

Who is in the cast and crew?

The cast mixes established names with a rising stage star:

  • Patsy Ferran, Olivier Award winner
  • Josh O'Connor, BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner
  • Damian Lewis, BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner
  • Lesley Manville, Oscar nominee

Behind the camera, Coen reassembles his longest-standing collaborators. Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, who shot "Inside Llewyn Davis," returns, as does composer Carter Burwell, whose credits with the Coens stretch from "Fargo" to "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs."

Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, Coen, Steven Rales, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin produce. Donald MacKinnon executive produces.

What does this change for Netflix's film strategy?

The theatrical commitment is the story's practical hinge. A fall 2027 release puts "Jack of Spades" in awards-season territory, and the combination of a prestige director, a literary source and a thespian-heavy cast reads like a playbook for Oscar positioning rather than a straight-to-subscriber drop. For Coen, it restores the big-screen treatment that "The Tragedy of Macbeth" received through A24 — now with Netflix footing the release. Whether the 2027 window holds, and how wide the run will be, will say a lot about how seriously the streamer intends to compete in cinemas.
