Neve Campbell has confirmed she will return as Sidney Prescott in "Scream 8." The announcement came Monday, in an interview with the Associated Press, while she promoted her role in the Netflix series "Black Doves."
"'Scream 8.' That's in the pipeline as well," Campbell said, listing the meta-horror sequel among her upcoming projects. Pressed for plot details, she demurred. "You know I can't tell you anything about Scream 8," she said, laughing. "I'll be in it."
The greenlight is arithmetic, not sentiment. "Scream 7," released in 2025, delivered the 30-year-old franchise's biggest opening ever with $97.2 million worldwide, then went on to become the series' highest-grossing installment: $208 million worldwide against a $45 million budget. Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures, which distributes the films, moved quickly to develop an eighth chapter.
Campbell has appeared in six of the seven "Scream" movies. The exception is 2023's "Scream 6," which she skipped after a contract dispute — a break she has discussed with striking candor.
At the time, she told CBS Mornings that she "didn't think I could live with myself" if she accepted the offer for "Scream 6" knowing that her "value to this franchise was bigger than what had been offered." "I just didn't feel right.. For me, I needed to make that choice," she said.
Her objections were already on record. In 2022, Campbell told Variety she would not return for the sixth installment because she felt "the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."
Money, in the end, talked. Campbell came back for "Scream 7" after receiving a reported $7 million salary to play Sidney again — roughly one-seventh of the film's final production budget.
What does this mean for the franchise?
The numbers explain the studio's urgency. A horror franchise that clears $200 million on a $45 million outlay is a rare asset, and Campbell's Sidney Prescott — the genre's definitive final girl (the lone survivor who confronts the killer in a slasher film) — remains its anchor. Her "Scream 7" return coincided with the series' commercial peak.
No release date, director or plot details for "Scream 8" have been announced. Campbell's confirmation is the only firm fact on the record. Given that her salary dispute once cost the franchise its lead, her early attachment suggests the sequel's dealmaking has gone more smoothly the second time around.
