Noel Gallagher has explained why his reunion with brother Liam after more than a decade apart involved almost no conversation: "Family is different, you don't have to say anything, it's as simple as that."
He made the comment in an unseen clip from "Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger," the Disney+ documentary following last year's reunion and sold-out world tour. The footage, drawn from the first joint interview with the Gallagher brothers in 25 years, screened at a special event at London's Abbey Road on Monday night.
"And you don't have to justify not saying anything to anyone else," Noel added in the clip.
Why didn't the brothers talk it out?
Noel contrasted his reunion with a hypothetical one between former Sex Pistols bandmates John Lydon and Steve Jones, which he said would likely have featured "angry finger pointing and accusations." With the Gallaghers, the exchange amounted to "How are you doing? And that's it."
Co-director Will Lovelace, who spoke at the Abbey Road event alongside fellow co-director Dylan Southern and writer/creator Steven Knight, confirmed the reunion played out exactly as Noel described.
"They walked back into a room together and we filmed it, and they started, and Oasis was back," Lovelace said. "So when Noel says family is different, you don't have to say anything. He literally means family is different. You don't have to say anything, and that's what happened."
What else does the documentary reveal?
Another clip from the film shows Liam joking that their mother used to tell him he was her favorite. "She'd go, you're my fucking number one son," he says, before describing how she would change the photos on her walls depending on which brother was visiting.
Steven Knight, best known as a writer of fiction, said the documentary was his first non-fiction project — and a humbling one. He singled out footage of the fans from the tour, including "that Welsh woman at the end, who is just brilliantly, eloquently, fantastically drunk and wonderful."
"What I do for a living is try pathetically to get somewhere close to what that is," Knight said.
"One of the most important things about them both is how funny they are," Knight added of the brothers.
When can viewers see it?
"Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger" is already this year's highest-grossing documentary in the U.K. It launches on Disney+ on Oct. 9, when the special clips shown at Abbey Road, including the brothers' first joint interview in 25 years, become available to subscribers.
