Peacock has released the official trailer for "Dig," a ten-episode comedy series created by Amy Poehler and Michael Schur, the team behind "Parks and Recreation" and "The Good Place." The show premieres November 23.

Screenwriter J. J. Philbin, Schur's wife, serves as writer and producer on the series, which adapts the 2023 novel Excavations by Kate Myers.

The premise is concrete: four women researchers work at a remote archaeological site in Greece. Their expedition takes an unexpected turn when the quartet unearths a priceless artifact — one that, by all rights, should not exist.

The show's logline spells out the stakes: "When the team uncovers a long-buried secret with the potential to rewrite history, they find themselves at the center of a high-stakes international conspiracy."

Who plays whom?

Poehler stars as Elise, the group's star excavator. Elise enlists the other three women in a scheme to hide the discovery from Neville, the dig's self-serving head archaeologist, played by Hugh Laurie, and to take credit for it themselves. The literal coverup quickly puts them in over their heads.

The rest of the quartet breaks down as follows:

  • Geraldine Viswanathan ("Bad Education") plays Dylan, who has returned to the dig after a five-year absence.
  • Fina Strazza ("Paper Girls") is Patty, Neville's naïve undergraduate assistant.
  • Antonia Thomas ("The Good Doctor") plays Clare, the expedition's arch preservationist.

The trailer also introduces two recurring characters: Lambros, a local shop owner and sometime looter played by Jason Mantzoukas, and Marcus "M.R." Robertson Jr., a wealthy archaeology buff played by Brennan Lee Mulligan.

Two guest stars round out the cast. Max Greenfield ("New Girl") appears as Andrew, an art dealer. Dan Bucatinsky ("Scandal") plays Fritz, a New York City museum director.

What does this change for viewers?

For Peacock, "Dig" pairs two of the most bankable names in television comedy with a genre premise — the archaeological thriller — that comedy rarely touches. For Poehler, it is a leading role on a platform series; for Schur, another chance to test whether his comedic formula transfers to a conspiracy plot.

The source material offers a hint of what to expect. Myers' Excavations centered the same setup: women doing the actual labor of a dig while a self-serving man runs the operation. The series keeps that dynamic, with Laurie cast as the antagonist authority figure and Poehler as the excavator who decides the discovery belongs to the people who found it.

What the trailer does not show is how the conspiracy resolves — or whether the artifact's impossible nature gets a supernatural explanation or a mundane one. Viewers will find out when all ten episodes arrive on Peacock on November 23.
