Programme

  1. Role Model canceled the final Berkeley tour date due to illness, making the June Friday Greek Theatre show in LA the last North American stop.
  2. The 90-minute set at the 6,000-capacity Greek Theatre supported his third studio album, "Chuck Timely & the Hourglass."
  3. "Love I You" features his now-ex Dakota Johnson; an audience member recites her part live each night.
  4. Role Model told the crowd Jake Shane attended Thursday's show to avoid attention being taken by Reneé Rapp on Friday.

Role Model's Friday night show at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre became the final North American date of his "Chuck on Tour" — not by design. The singer, real name Tucker Pillsbury, canceled the following night's Berkeley stop due to illness, making the second of two LA dates the de facto finale.

There was no sign of illness at the 6,000-capacity venue. Pillsbury performed a 90-minute set in his latest persona, Chuck Timely, a time-traveler invented for his third studio album, "Chuck Timely & the Hourglass." (The character follows 2024's Saint Laurent Cowboy, his guise for the album "Kansas Anymore.") He has described Chuck as someone who's "been around through all the eras and seems to grab little pieces from each along the way. He's been around forever."

How did the show open?

Not smoothly. Pillsbury made a grand entrance to a pre-recorded "Chuck's Mantra," emerging from darkness for "High Hopes 3000." The track dropped out for a few moments, and a confused silence overtook the crowd. When it resumed, the lyrics were nearly drowned out by cheers as his silhouette appeared in golden lights.

The energy recovered fast. "I don't say this every night, and I didn't say it last night," he shouted, "but you can tell when a show is going to be fucking lit one song in — and tonight's going to be a fun night!"

Pillsbury held that pace across 90 minutes, alternating between singing and playing acoustic and electric guitars. Things slowed only for lower-key numbers like "The Longest Goodbye" and "Good Thing," the latter prompting hundreds of fans to wave their phone flashlights.

What was the staging?

Simple, with jokes doing the heavy lifting. Comedic placement cards labeled each bandmember — "Bass God," "Piano Man" and, naturally, "Chuck" — while a marker at the back of the stage read, "Stand here for the drama."

Pillsbury didn't stand in the designated spot, but he did remind the audience of the real drama attached to "Love I You," which features his now-ex Dakota Johnson. Rather than play her recorded voice live, he invites an audience member each night to recite the song's popular back-and-forth exchange.

The setlist reached back into pre-Chuck eras too, including "Writing's on the Wall," "Slipfast," "Old Recliners" and the evening's most-anticipated song, "Sally, When the Wine Runs Out."

Who was in the audience?

Family and, allegedly, a strategist. Pillsbury's parents were in the house. He also shared what he called "some tea": his friend, online personality Jake Shane, attended Thursday night's show specifically because singer Reneé Rapp would be at Friday's.

"He wanted all the fucking attention on him, so he decided to come last night because he knew Reneé would take all the attention from him," Pillsbury told the crowd. "And that's fucking true!"

As the audience erupted and scanned for Rapp, he cut the hunt short. "Alright stop looking at her, look at me," he laughed. "I got fucking dressed up for you."

Whether Chuck Timely's hourglass gets refilled for a rescheduled Berkeley date remains unannounced. For now, an illness-scrubbed LA crowd got the finale nobody planned.
