Tom Hanks Revives David S. Pumpkins as SNL's Halloween Cold Open Takes On Trump
Tom Hanks revived David S. Pumpkins for SNL's Halloween cold open, where James Austin Johnson's Trump quipped 'I might be gay' while skewering his rally rhetoric ahead of Nov. 3.

Tom Hanks brought David S. Pumpkins back to "Saturday Night Live" on Halloween night, in a cold open that aimed squarely at President Trump's stump rhetoric and his recent fixation with men's physiques.
The sketch, built as a ride through a low-end amusement park's Halloween attraction, cast Hanks in the lounge-act pumpkins suit he first played in 2016. Mikey Day and former "SNL" cast member Bobby Moynihan joined him in full-body skeleton jumpers and white face paint, flanking the signature dorky dance routine.
Grace Reiter and Jeremy Culhane played the young couple taking the ride. Kenan Thompson appeared as a Grim Reaper guide, steering them through a series of scary scenes until the interruptions began.
Who else showed up?
James Austin Johnson arrived as Trump, freezing the other players mid-scene to lament Republican prospects in the Nov. 3 midterm election. The sketch then ran a string of risqué jokes about the president's habit of commenting on the backsides of candidates he has endorsed at recent campaign rallies.
"We both appeared in 2016. We're both very loud, very orange and, frankly, very annoying," Johnson's Trump said, comparing himself to Pumpkins. "Good acting, great ass. A great ass on Hanks — something that I've enjoyed lately admiring. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just that I might be gay."
He then worked through the midterms. "The midterms are on Tuesday. The polls say we're doing very badly — aww aww," Johnson's Trump said. "They're saying Texas is turning purple, just like my hand." He raised a hand showing a gigantic bruise. The sketch had Trump call Texas GOP Senate candidate Ken Paxton "an ugly son of a bitch" while urging voters to pick him over Democrat James Talarico — acknowledged as "much better looking. What a dynamic ass."
What happened with Nicki Minaj and the press secretary?
Saidah Belo-Osagie barreled in as Nicki Minaj, spoofing the rapper's vocal support for Trump and MAGA. The bit positioned Minaj as Trump's next press secretary, following Katie Zacharia's spectacularly quick flame-out in the job earlier this month.
"Trump's out here killing it — and by it, I mean my career," Belo-Osagie's Minaj said. Johnson's Trump, in keeping with the sketch's running gag, noted Minaj's famous curves: "Perhaps if it was on a man, I could admire it."
Thompson's Grim Reaper broke from the frozen tableau and rushed past Trump, who called out "thank you for that donation." Thompson's reply: "Yeah, you wish, bitch."
The open closed with Trump bringing out Zacharia, who flubbed the show's signature line, "Live from New York, it's Saturday night."
The Halloween installment is hosted by "Obsession" star Inde Navarrette, with Gracie Abrams as musical guest. With the midterms two days out, the show has plainly decided the president's rally material writes its own parody — the writers mostly just transcribed it.
