Programme
- Steven Soderbergh steps in to complete final weeks of principal photography on 'The Batman: Part II' while Matt Reeves attends to a family matter.
- The release date remains February 18, 2028, unshifted after a delay of a little over a week.
- The original 'The Batman' grossed $772 million worldwide; six years will separate it from the sequel.
- Soderbergh's last studio film was 2023's 'Magic Mike's Last Dance'.
- Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell and Andy Serkis return; newcomers include Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan.
Steven Soderbergh will finish the final weeks of principal photography on "The Batman: Part II" while director Matt Reeves attends to an ongoing family matter, IndieWire has confirmed. Production on the DC sequel, starring Robert Pattinson, had been paused for a little over a week because of Reeves' absence.
The studio laid out the arrangement in a statement. "As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on 'The Batman Part 2,'" the statement reads. "Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt's vision of the film."
Soderbergh, for his part, framed the job as seamless integration rather than a takeover. "I thought Matt Reeves' work on 'The Batman' was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent," he said. "The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film."
In other words, this is a service gig, not an auteur rewrite. Reeves keeps authorship; Soderbergh supplies the footage.
What does this change for the release date?
Nothing, so far. "The Batman: Part II" is still dated for February 18, 2028, and that date hasn't shifted amid the delay, according to IndieWire. The gap between films is already long — six years will separate the sequel from 2022's "The Batman," which grossed $772 million worldwide.
Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne. Colin Farrell is back as The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred. Newcomers to the cast include:
- Sebastian Stan
- Scarlett Johansson
- Brian Tyree Henry
- Jayme Lawson
- Charles Dance
- Gil Perez-Abraham
- Sebastian Koch
Why Soderbergh is an unusual pick
A fill-in directing gig on a studio tentpole (the industry term for a big-budget franchise release meant to anchor a studio's year) is rare for a filmmaker of Soderbergh's stature. He has history with Warner Bros. on the Ocean's trilogy and with HBO and HBO Max on films like "No Sudden Move." He's also famously fast and prolific.
Even so, this counts as his biggest film in a while — and his only studio film since 2023's "Magic Mike's Last Dance." His most recent narrative feature was this year's "The Christophers" from Neon. He also directed the documentary "John Lennon: The Last Interview," which premiered at Cannes but currently has no distribution.
The arrangement is unusual, but the mechanism is simple: two directors, one vision, and a hard release date that hasn't moved. Whether the Soderbergh-assisted footage stays invisible in the final cut will be the quiet question hanging over the film until February 2028.
