Warner Bros. announced Oct. 5 that it had temporarily paused production on “The Batman Part II” while director Matt Reeves focused on a family matter. The studio gave no specific reason for his leave.

Robert Pattinson told GamesRadar+ that Steven Soderbergh would take over principal photography (the main filmed shoot) after Reeves stepped back earlier that month. Pattinson welcomed the arrangement:

“I am so happy he’s come on to help Matt. It’s incredibly generous of him – and he’s doing it in the loveliest way. It’s completely selfless. I think Matt had put so much work into the script, and we’re almost done.”

“So for someone to come in and say, ‘I just want to help Matt do it; I want to do it in conjunction with him and just get it to the edit.’ And to have someone who’s as talented as Steven doing it is great.”

The arrangement is closer to passing the camera for the remaining shoot than to replacing the director, because both Reeves and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn say Reeves remains in charge. The credits need not change.

When does filming restart?

Pattinson gave a near-term timetable:

“I think they’re in production already. And I’m starting in a couple of days.”

Warner Bros. did not name a restart date in its Oct. 5 statement. The studio also had not announced whether the film would move from Feb. 18, 2028. Pattinson’s estimate points to an early restart, although the release question remains open.

Who remains in charge?

Reeves wrote on X shortly after the announcement:

“Just to be clear, I am not leaving ‘The Batman Part II.’ I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”

Gunn wrote to fans on Threads:

“Matt is still the director of ‘The Batman 2’ and always will be. I can’t express how profoundly grateful and moved we are by Steven’s offer to help him complete his vision.”

Their statements place Soderbergh in an assisting role, not the director’s chair, while making clear that Reeves will properly finish his film. Neither post changes Pattinson’s place in the project.

Why did production stop?

Warner Bros. provided this statement at the time:

“Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a studio rep said at the time. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

The announcement identified the family matter as the reason for the pause and promised DC Studios’ full support. It supplied no personal detail and offered no revised production schedule.

How will Soderbergh’s footage join Reeves’s?

Soderbergh set out the method in his own statement:

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh added in his own statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”

His wording placed continuity ahead of reinvention. New footage should match what has already been shot, not overwrite it. That is a demanding standard for material intended to support Reeves’s finished film.

Who is in the cast?

Along with Pattinson, the announced cast includes:

  • Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance and Brian Tyree Henry.
  • Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
  • Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
  • Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.

The next checkpoint comes when production resumes: Soderbergh’s footage must join material already shot under Reeves, while any change to the Feb. 18, 2028 release timetable remains only a possibility. For now, the credits stay simple. Reeves directs. Soderbergh shoots. Pattinson’s verdict was “completely selfless.”
