Steven Soderbergh will complete the final weeks of principal photography on "The Batman Part II" while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter, Variety confirmed. DC Studios announced the arrangement this week, ending a production pause first disclosed in early October.
What is the studio actually saying?
"As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on 'The Batman Part 2,'" a studio representative said. "Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt's vision of the film," the rep added.
When the pause was announced in October, a separate studio statement said only that "Production on 'The Batman Part II' has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter." The studio has not said what the matter involves, when Reeves expects to return, or whether cameras have rolled again since. The rep called the situation "ongoing."
What is Soderbergh actually doing on set?
Soderbergh framed the job as assistant work rather than a co-directing credit. "I thought Matt Reeves' work on 'The Batman' was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent," he said. "The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film," he added.
That language leaves one question open: how much of the final cut will Soderbergh actually shape? His stated brief is matching footage, not re-authored scenes. On a film already years behind schedule, even a handful of re-shoots can ripple through editing, scoring and post-production calendars.
Who else is attached?
Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader. The announced ensemble also includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.
Soderbergh, an Oscar winner for "Traffic," arrives on set fresh off four recent releases: "The Christophers," "Black Bag," "Presence" and "John Lennon: The Last Interview." He is best known for "Traffic," "Erin Brockovich," "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" and "Ocean's Eleven."
Where does the release date stand?
"The Batman Part II" has moved three times since its 2022 CinemaCon unveiling. Warner Bros. first set the release for Oct. 2, 2026, then shifted it to Oct. 1, 2027, and in June slipped it again to February 2028. Reeves' first "Batman" opened in March 2022.
The studio has not confirmed that the February 2028 date still holds. That is the figure to watch: just over two years remain for Soderbergh's pickups, post-production and whatever Reeves chooses to finish on his return.
